Hello everyone, I'm Sharon and have recently decided to return to tutoring because of Covid 19 and the stressful issues concerning returning back to school. I am here to help and share my math expertise during an unprecedented time in education.
Currently I am a creativity coach at Beyond Creative Boundaries and work with artists. This work has made me extremely perceptive to the various forms of obstacles that exist in one's creative process. I have been extremely successful in moving individuals beyond their boundaries to expand their creativity in ways they could not have known.

I also have 20 years of teaching experience in the Rochester City School District as a part-time math resource teacher. I have experience teaching basic mathematics to elementary students and pre algebra, algebra, and geometry to high school students.
I worked as a tutor for Monroe Boces I in Rochester, New York and tutored math through a tutoring agency in Petaluma, California.

My philosophy of working with children focuses on the whole child and is based on exploring different methods of learning. I am passionate about researching various math resources to ensure that my students have all necessary tools to comprehend and succeed in reaching their goals. When a student is struggling with a math concept, I will break it down and invite creative visual and practical solutions that surpass the traditional methods.

The teacher/student relationship is fundamental to the success of the student"s learning, not in a dependent way, but in a fashion that builds self-esteem. It is very important to me that I have a good connection to my student. One that fosters trust and friendship and a sense of knowing that I am on their side and will support any learning difficulties. I am not just a tutor, I am their coach and cheerleader!

I have a tremendous respect for the intelligence of children and my goal is to encourage their intellectual process and assist in building confidence so they feel competent in moving forward to learn more advanced

Drawing

My creative process and artistic practice have fueled my life for over 25 years. My expertise includes sculpture, drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, installations, photography, and video. I started teaching classes and workshops in sculpture, drawing, and painting to children in San Francisco. I have taught art for the Memorial Art Gallery, Young Audiences and privately in my art studio. I have had great success with elementary and secondary students in artist in-residency programs through art councils and organizations through out NYS. I founded the Rochester Studio in the 1980’s and offered courses and workshops in sculpture and figure drawing. My teaching methods depend on the discipline, age, and environment. When I work with elementary children, I start with basic information concerning the medium. When teaching drawing, I first introduce the possibilities of using pencil, charcoal, crayon, pastel as well as other options. I demonstrate and verbalize every step of the focused process and have students follow up by experimenting. Tutoring art is very specific since the student usually has a goal of what he or she would like to achieve artistically. It is important to develop of good relationship with the student and I convey that their success is also my goal and that my intention is to integrate play and exploration together. I do not put emphasis on the final product. Art is about expressing oneself creatively and part of that is being given the freedom to experiment while incorporating various skills. With drawing, I introduce various techniques such as line, cross-hatching, shading, and positive/negative space. Besides demonstrating, I also present artwork created by other artists to demonstrate different styles of drawing. How I proceed to teach depend on many factors since each child is unique. I discover what the student is interested in drawing since it is advantageous to be excited about the subject. If a student wants to draw faces, I will first go over the basic proportions of the head.
