Joyce Tseng is an award-winning violist with orchestral, chamber, and solo experience. She has appeared with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman Philharmonia, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Heifetz International Music Institute, and the Hong Kong Festival Orchestra, and has presented recitals at the American Viola Society Festivals and the Eastman School of Music. Joyce Tseng is an award-winning violist with orchestral, chamber, and solo experience. She has appeared with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Eastman Philharmonia, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Heifetz International Music Institute, and the Hong Kong Festival Orchestra, and has presented recitals at the American Viola Society Festivals and the Eastman School of Music. Oppelt Viola Prize (2019 & 2022), prizes in the AVS Orchestral Audition Competition (2024) and AVS Collegiate Competition (2018), and first prizes in the Macao Young Musicians Competitions (2014).
With 10+ years teaching experience (ages 4-60), she spent five years as a Teaching Assistant in Professor George Taylor's Eastman viola studio, taught Secondary Viola and Strings I & II technique for Music Education majors, and coaches chamber ensembles at the University of Rochester. She mentored adult violin/viola learners in New Horizons Green Strings at the Eastman Community Music School.
Currently pursuing a DMA in Viola Performance and Literature with Phillip Ying, she holds BM, MM, and DMA degrees from the Eastman School of Music. Summer studies included lessons with Masao Kawasaki, Roberto Diaz, Robert Vernon, and Martha Katz. She has participated in masterclasses by Kim Kashkashian, Atar Arad, Hsin-Yun Huang, Victoria Chiang, and others.
Joyce's advanced studies in Online Teaching and Learning at the Warner School of Education, University of Rochester, have equipped her with expertise in online pedagogy, evidence-based best practices, and rigorous, student-centered digital learning design.
Joyce is currently a board member of the American Viola Society.
