Incoming Medical Student: Experienced Math, Science, and SAT Tutor

My name is Raj and I will be an incoming medical student. I completed my master's degree in biological sciences, where I helped conduct novel research. Here, I had my first experience with tutoring for the SAT.

My expertise is in standardized test prep, especially with the SAT. I take time with my students and prepare beforehand so I can deliver the best education possible. My methods are prone to change depending on the student. However, I find that repetition with practice problems and exposure to problems serves the student far better than just lecturing.

Through practice problems, I create google documents that are tailored for each student to help students in specific topics and concepts that are their weak points. In addition, I will provide a step-by-step guide for each problem and have the student follow along. I will actively try to have the student take over for each problem unless they get stuck, in which I will jump in until they can keep moving forward. Learning, especially with topics that a student may struggle with, is not an easy task. There will be periods in which a student will be stressed and have great difficulty in understanding something. However, this is where true learning happens. To struggle through difficulty material is how one can optimize their scores for standardized testing.

My students have routinely improved their SAT scores by 100-200 points during the duration of a month with my methods. The majority of the time, my students were in their junior or senior years of high school (roughly 15-17 years old). My students average in the 1400s in the scores, but I've consistently had students score in the 1500s and even had a student score a 1580. My experiences with tutoring has brought me great joy and has influenced my decision in what type of physician I will be and how to adopt a teaching role in my future. Beyond the SAT, I have also tutored students in a multitude of different math subjects and life sciences, such as biology and chemistry.
