Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Common Core

I have taught English in the public school system using the common core standards as a guideline for my lesson plans from the time NY State adopted them.
I have also tutored math using workbooks such as the Ready series, which teaches math using math CC guidelines. Having this background, I confidently tutor both subjects using the math and English guidelines to prepare my students for CC based exams.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am NY State Certified in Reading K-12. I have taught students in grades 6-8 for over 25 years, in ELA classes, Computer Lab ESL and ELA classes and Reading Lab classes. I have also worked as a substitute teacher in elementary classes from grades Pre-K through five. I have taught English, ESL, Reading, Math and Social Studies. I work well with students of all ages.

I was an English, Reading and Computer Lab teacher at a Middle School. I taught using both written aids and computer programs designed to teach and reinforce Phonics and phonemic awareness. I am very familiar with this branch of Reading and Speaking and can teach it effectively as a tutor.

Public Speaking

I successfully completed two speech classes while a student at Columbia University. As an English and Reading teacher of 25 years I have modeled correct speech to English and Reading students, including ELL and ESL students. My pronunciation is excellent, and I speak standard American English on the level of a radio or television news reporter or anchor. I have taught public speaking in English classes and have tutored and critiqued students preparing to give presentations and dramatic performances.

While teaching English on the Middle School level for over 25 years, I have prepared hundreds of students for their state ELA exams. My latest class did so well that I was rated Effective by the NY State Education Department. I have also tutored middle school and high school students in Math for several years. Personally, I have achieved a nearly perfect score overall (294) on the L.A.S.T. teacher exam, and scored perfect essay scores (300) on each of the two NY State teacher exams. I am well versed in both the NY State Regents English and Math exams and can definitely help students to improve their scores in both of these exams.

Social Studies

From 1989-1992 (3 years) I was a full-time, appointed 7th and 8th grade Social Studies teacher at a public Middle School in Brooklyn, NY. I prepared and delivered a wide variety of interesting, creative and challenging lessons for several honors classes on a full-time basis. While a college student, I completed several courses in Sociology, History and Political Science. My score of 294/300 on the LAST teacher exam and perfect scores of 300 on the essay portions of both the LAST and ATS-W teacher exams are evidence of my excellent analytical and writing skills.

Study Skills

As an ELA teacher for 25 years, I have taught my students how to study effectively and earn high grades. On a recent ELA NY State exam, my students performed so well that I was rated Effective by the NY State Education Department. While working as a teacher, I was trained and scored NY State ELA exams. Personally, on the NY State LAST teacher's exam, I scored 294 out of 300 points, with a perfect 300 on the essay. I am also skilled at teaching Math, having taught and tutored Math for several years in extended day classes and in my school's computer lab. I can offer excellent study methods to help students improve both their grades and test scores.

Great tutor experience — I couldn't be more pleased with having Marc tutor my daughter in Algebra 2/trigonometry. When Marc began tutoring my daughter in Oct. 2014, she had a 72 average in class and was struggling to complete assignments. I was becoming increasingly concerned, so I reached out to Marc and he started hour long lessons twice a week. Since then, I am happy to report my daughter's average has gone up to a 93 ...
