Hello! My name is Zoë, I'm a Grinnell College graduate with a BA in English and a love for reading. While attending Grinnell, I held a position as a Writing Mentor for two years, during which I worked closely with students, often freshmen or sophomores, on a variety of writing assignments. Students that sought my guidance would schedule a one-on-one meeting with me to discuss questions about how best to tackle an assignment, how to clearly communicate an idea that hadn't been sounding right, or how to restructure a piece to read more cohesively. Sometimes students came to me begrudgingly at the request of their professor with very little desire to hear what I have to offer, and through patient discussion, we would find a path to improvement that balanced the needs of the student with the expectations of the professor. Part of being a Writing Mentor included working with my peers to develop methods of instruction that emphasize empathy, patience, and collaboration, keeping in mind that there isn't one right way to write effectively.

I can help with College Application Essays, argumentative essays for any class subject, and creative pieces, including poetry and (non)fiction stories. While my students always leave with a more polished piece, my goal is to guide students to a more effective writing process that makes writing feel easier and leads to less procrastination.

Crafting a piece of writing has many steps, and I'm happy to help at any point along the way, whether it be brainstorming new ideas, revising a first draft, or editing a nearly finished piece. I find joy in hearing a variety of perspectives, and my role as writing tutor is to amplify students' unique voices and boost confidence in young writers' ideas. I prefer to work with students in college level courses, including high school AP courses, but I'm happy to discuss working with students that don't fall into that category. Please reach out with any questions or to schedule a session!
