My name is Emily S. and I tutor middle, high school, and college students full time in NYC. I am a graduate of The Brearley School '13, Bowdoin College '17, and Columbia University '21, where I received my MFA in poetry and wrote my first book.
After graduate school, I taught high school English and Creative Writing at The Churchill School and Center. I gained invaluable experience at Churchill supporting students 1-1 with language-based learning disabilities — improving their critical thinking skills, literary analysis, close reading, vocabulary and grammar, creative writing, and organization and time management. My focus, humor, patience, and enthusiasm for literature and language help encourage confidence in my students and make skill-building a much more enjoyable process.
Whether my tutoring clients have diagnosed learning disabilities or not, I love to help them express their unique voices and their own point of view. My students and I often prepare reading guides, study vocabulary and grammar, practice close reading and analysis, analytical and creative writing, and college essay writing. I can also help with executive functioning, time management, and organization skills. I look forward to working with you!
