About Cole

I am a friendly, neighborhood history teacher that mixes structure, content, effort, and humor into my time with students. While my tutoring is valued for any student, I am particularly skilled at bringing the less than enthused student to the subject of history, and the other social studies domains. I have 15 years of certified and classroom and consultant experience both here and abroad, and hold permanent NJ Teaching Certificates in Elementary and Secondary Social Studies. I am three-year grant recipient of Woodrow Wilson Teaching American History, am involved with non-profit educational efforts in support of history and civics education, and run a nationally-endorsed civic education non-profit.

I teach to instill a sense of curiosity and, while perhaps not necessarily a "joy" of learning, at least a competent tolerance of learning. The skills and content are tough at the beginning, but become easier as success is broken into attainable steps and behaviors. These habits form over time and can be used on other subjects. I expect to get the results intended within six to ten hours, at which time the student should have reached the goals set at the outset of the tutoring. While ongoing and periodic support can be arranged, my goal is to develop a self-sufficiency that bolsters student competence and confidence, and mitigates the need for a tutor. I have some spare time most weeks and seek a limited number of students in need of some assistance, focus, and inspiration.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

Permanent Certificate for High School Social Studies, Woodrow Wilson Scholar, 2015 recipient of Vandenberg Aerospace Education Award from Air Force Association.

More information upon request.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have extensive experience teaching core subjects for grades K-8. I work at every grade level and in every subject, including students that need creative teaching to learn a concept or skill.

Elementary Math

I serve as a preferred substitute in a strong area school district, and for any grade and subject area. I can conduct elementary math lessons directly, and can assist teachers in-class with students that need additional guidance the teacher often doesn't have enough time to provide in 40 minutes.
I can provide uninterrupted tutor time to tackle assignments, and allow for as many learning questions a student might have.

Social Studies

I hold a Standard certificate for Elementary and Secondary Social Studies with classroom and private tutoring experience.
I was a Three-year Woodrow Wilson Scholar in US History, and have taught and consulted on civics education in US and abroad since 2000.
I was Appointed by NJ Attorney General and served on NJ Help America Vote Act (HAVA) Planning Committee, serving to implement law allowing under-18 students to be trained as poll workers.
I just shared in the Air Force Association's 2015 Vandenberg Award for Aerospace Education as part of Spirit of 45's international commemoration of WWII.
I have other relevant experience involving active duty and wounded warrior Athletes.

Special Needs

I have special needs experience with dozens of students, and am utilized by K-12 districts as a designated special needs substitute, and am the first teacher requested when a special needs substitute needed.

Study Skills

I hold a Standard certificate for Elementary and Secondary Social Studies with classroom and private tutoring experience.
I was a Three-year Woodrow Wilson Scholar in US History, and have taught and consulted on civics education in US and abroad since 2000.
I have structured study skill development hat accelerates improvement by instilling self-directed academic work. The student understands and manages their own workflow, with skills strengthening as work load increases slightly over time.
I am an excellent and positive motivator.

Vocabulary
