Hello, my name is Beck. I am currently studying at Marist University pursuing a double major in Computer Science and Data Science. I am deeply passionate about math and computing. Trust me, I know how challenging these subjects are for many students, and how necessary it can be to get help outside the classroom to guarantee success. As someone who has benefited from tutoring services, I want to offer my knowledge and experience so that others can get that same leg up.
I began volunteer tutoring in my sophomore year of high school, typically helping with Algebra and Trig. Last year, as a sophomore in college, I began tutoring Intro to Programming, Database Management, and Software Development courses through my university. I run exclusively one-on-one sessions as it allows me to get to know each student, their struggle points, and their preferred learning style, ensuring every session is more effective for the student than the last.
My goal for each session is not to simply help a student with their homework or to re-explain the concepts they learned in class. My goal is to discern which points the student doesn’t have a full grasp of and design a study plan for them to use during and after the session. I prefer for students to have done as much of their homework as possible before we meet, that way no time is wasted on what they already know. Then I can look over the work they have already done and help them work through the parts they couldn’t figure out. I leave them with extra resources on the subject (youtube videos, practice problems, etc) and note their struggle points for later (ex. creating an exam study guide).
