I am an undergraduate student at Stony Brook University pursuing a degree in Environmental Studies & Psychology, with a specific interest in public service. I have recently worked in a 10-month AmeriCorps NCCC program where I served various communities, with one notable project being filing IRS-certified tax returns for Spanish-speaking families. I have a strong background in mathematics, scoring a 5 on the 2023 AP Calculus exam. Moreover, I co-founded a local math tutoring business in my town, where I offer both in-person and virtual math tutoring, homework help, enrichment, and SAT prep to students of varying levels from elementary to pre-calculus. I have also provided voluntary tutoring services at a middle school for 7th-grade math students for one year. I have been providing paid weekly one-on-one math help for the past 4 years, with most of my students now virtual as I am away at university. Growing up, I learned the value of math from my mother, who also tutors professionally, learning that every learner is different and that it is important to be flexible and quick-thinking when working with each individual's needs. Oftentimes, in school, students are told what to know, fed information, and learn to rote memorize content. I think with one-on-one discussions, students can gain a stronger foundational understanding, get clarification on confusing topics, and be better prepared for tests. As a result, my students not only see improvements in their grades but also build their confidence and appreciation for math. With tutoring through Wyzant, I hope to continue to facilitate a joy for math as it surrounds us in our daily lives.
