I tutor best in academic English, and Art/Art History, as those are both my strongest subjects as well as my hobbies. I took AP Literature in high school, and scored a 4 on the AP exam. I did not take the AP Studio exam, but did take the class. I've attended The Art Effect since I was 12, and have won multiple awards.
My younger brother has a learning curve, which makes it difficult for him to understand certain topics. His biggest challenge is asking for help, as he feels “he should know this”, which I believe is a trap many students find themselves to be in. My brother has caused me to adapt a style of teaching, where I work on enhancing and showing off the students strengths to build confidence, while figuring out where their weaknesses are and helping them overcome them. This can be done through example work, in depth explanation, or helpful insight. I find that encouraging students to be okay with making mistakes, allows them to be more receptive to learning.
