I love teaching writing. Wish I’d known that when I was getting my elementary teaching certification in 1999, or even when I got my math teaching certification in 2001. I love teaching writing. Wish I’d known that when I was getting my elementary teaching certification in 1999, or even when I got my math teaching certification in 2001. Instead, I didn’t learn it until I was in my forties, after writing and selling a bunch of novels, then asking a local college if I could teach fiction writing for their school.
They didn’t have a fiction writing class for me to teach, but offered me a college composition course instead. I’ve now taught more than a dozen writing classes for that college, including the fiction writing course I originally wanted, which they created for me after they read the glowing student feedback from my other classes.
Do you want to guess the most common feedback I receive on the end-of-semester surveys? A solid half of my students say it’s the one-to-one conferences with me. Tutoring is the most helpful thing I do.
Maybe it’s the math teacher in me. I see patterns in students’ writing and teach them strategies for improving those patterns. I show them the forest through the trees, so that the next time they’re staring at a tree trunk, they can get themselves unstuck in a way that makes sense to them.
Need to make a college application essay sing? I can help you find your voice. Got a doctoral dissertation that’s gone off the rails? My eyes light up just thinking about righting those train cars and getting you back up to speed.
No matter the size of the project or what your skill level is, I can help. Because I love teaching writing far more than I ever loved teaching the Pythagorean theorem.
