Hello, my name is Joyce. Thank you for checking out my profile! I am NYS certified for mathematics, grades 7-12. I hold a Bachelor's of Arts in Math and a Master's in Math Education, both from IONA College in New Rochelle, New York. I have tutored math for the past 23 years, all levels, children, teens and adults. I was a math teacher for 15 years. I taught PreAlgebra, Algebra1, Geometry, Algebra2, Trigonometry, Personal Finance and PreCalculus. I worked with thousands of students in traditional, honors level, College level, and collaborative classroom settings. Now only tutoring, I love that I can focus my energy tutoring, spending more time with my family, and doing more Zumba!

I will always make my explanations clear and understood. I like to take a math problem step-by-step. I can explain a problem in multiple ways. After 15 years of teaching, I like to think I’m an expert at deciding which method to choose after a quick assessment with a student.

For older students, I am an expert with the TI Calculators. The online whiteboard learning offered on Wyzant is amazing, and teaching math is very easy using their online tutoring technology. I like to type as I talk (yes, I type very fast!) so that a student doesn’t have to remember what I said for notes, a great asset for visual learners.

For elementary students, I like to use manipulatives like fraction tiles and base 10 blocks alongside traditional methods, great for visual and tactile learners. I play games to make things more fun. I can teach with every common core method, just like a textbook. Online learning is made very colorful when I cut and paste pictures of fractions, bar graphs or other visuals, just like in a classroom.

I currently charge $60 per hour for online tutoring, and $70 per hour for in person sessions near Pelham, NY. I require a 12 hour cancellation notice. I hope that I am the math tutor that best fits your needs, either for online tutoring or in-person sessions. Please contact me with any questions, I look forward to your inquiry.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is extremely important for students because it provides a needed credit for high school graduation. Algebra 1 was my first paid tutoring job. I was a senior in high school and was hired by my gym teacher to tutor her daughter, a freshman. Out of the hundreds of students I've tutored over 23 years, more than half have been for Algebra 1. It is very important that an Algebra 1 tutor approach most problems in 3 ways for best understanding, the way common core intended the math to be taught - graphically, algebraic w/equations, and arithmetic w/patterns. I always keeps this in mind when tutoring Algebra 1. I am an expert with the NYS Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 Regents exams.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 often has multiple step problems. Let me list out each step clearly like I'm your personal textbook. Then I will carefully work through each problem. I love explaining Algebra 2, especially the trigonometry and working with polynomials. I can teach the math in multiple ways and explain topics simply using step-by-step procedure. I am an expert at using the TI graphing calculators.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

The trick to great prealgebra tutoring is practice, practice, practice! I have hundreds of pages of worksheets for you to practice your essential prealgebra skills with, and master the math. I know tricks for learning multiplication, best ways to operate fractions, and easy to understand equations.

I have completed every NYS Alg 1, Geo, Alg 2 Regents since 1998 and they've been called so many different names! The math work is essentially the same, but how the question is asked has vastly changed, and I'm an expert on the differences.
