Hello. My name is Emily. As of May 2014, I will have a B.A. in English from the Honors College at the University at Albany. One of the requirements for my degree was to complete a research thesis project in literature over the course of two semesters. My project won an Undergraduate Research Award. I am also the recipient of the Vivian C. Hopkins Award which is award to students in the English Department who demonstrates outstanding scholastic ability and integrity. I have a lot of experience with writing and editing.

I have also had a lot of experience tutoring elementary aged students in a variety of subjects. In the Spring 2014 I participated in an internship at the NYS Museum after school program: Museum Club. Museum Club had students from second to sixth grade, and I had the opportunity to help most of them with different homework assignments, project, and, even, science fair projects. This experience is only the last in a long line of experience with tutoring children in middle school or younger.

English

English

I have just received my B.A. in English and have always enjoyed reading and writing on my own. I have also had tutoring experience in English at all levels. At the college level I have helped international friends revise papers and learn a better handle on sentence, paragraph, and essay, structure. I have also worked with younger children ages ranging from 7-15 with a variety of English related problems including: ESL, essay writing, and reading help.
Grammar

Grammar

In middle school my Language Arts or Grammar teacher basically made us rewrite our textbooks. I quickly realized how handy this rather tedious task was in High School when I discovered that I was one of the students with a better grasp on some lesser know grammatical concepts. When teaching grammar, it is important to emphasize that grammar rules are rules. While these rules may not always be as straight forward or consistent, one can relate them to the formulaic rules seen in math.
Literature

Literature

I have just graduated from the Honor College at the University at Albany with an English degree, so my love of literature is official. For my honors thesis I used Mary Shelley's Frankenstein as a sort of comparison to these anime films. My project showed one of the many ways in which literature is relevant today. This connection is important because many students who struggle with literature seem to also deny its relevance.
Microsoft Excel

Microsoft Excel

I have years of experience teaching Excel in a classroom and one-on-one. My students frequently thank me for my patience. I have worked with high school students preparing for college, adults returning to the workforce, and people just looking to improve their digital skills.
Microsoft PowerPoint

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have been using and teaching PowerPoint to individuals and in a classroom setting for years. Most students are appreciative of patience and responsiveness to their questions. I have worked with adults of all skill levels!
Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word is one of the programs that have a lot of great underutilized tools. I have been helping people use Word for years. My students thank me for my patience. I have worked with adults of all digital skill levels!
Reading

Reading

I have just received my B.A. in English from the University at Albany Honors College. Part of the requirements for this degree was to write a well researched thesis, which required reading and deciphering difficult texts and articles. Besides my own experience with advanced reading materials I have also helped others improve their own reading skills through one-on-one reading time and practice.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Having a good vocabulary helps not only with reading, but also with writing. For my English degree, I had to employ these skills to write a well researched thesis.
Writing

Writing

I am both a creative and technical writer. Recently I have completed a thesis for my B.A. in English from the honors College at the University at Albany. I have also participated in creative writing workshops and have had a couple of my own pieces publish in journals.
