Bio

Hi! I'm a graduate of Brown University and have been tutoring for over fifteen years. I specialize in math, which was my favorite subject growing up. There's nothing quite like problem solving, and I'm dedicated to helping students find the ease, enjoyment, and success I did when I was in school. I received honors and awards in math in high school, and I went to Brown with a math/science/technology scholarship. Although I ended up pursuing a career in the arts, I've been tutoring math since...

Although I ended up pursuing a career in the arts, I've been tutoring math since graduating college, and it is STILL my favorite subject! I've worked with a range of ages and levels, from six-year-olds learning arithmetic to teenagers and adults studying Pre-Calculus or prepping for the SAT. Currently I'm tutoring SAT Math, Trigonometry, Algebra 2, Geometry, Algebra 1, Pre-Algebra, and Elementary School Math.

One-on-one tutoring gives me the opportunity to find out just where each student needs more explanation, practice, or a new way to think about a concept. As I get to know a student's strengths, weaknesses, and learning style, I can tailor our work to be most effective and efficient for that student's goals.

It's thrilling to see students gain confidence where they were once frustrated or hesitant, to watch their grades and test scores improve, and to see them expand the breadth of subjects they consider themselves "good at" and careers they might pursue in the future. It's particularly exciting to see students start to enjoy math as much as I do. With a solid understanding of underlying concepts, the process of applying them flexibly becomes creative, adventurous, even fun.

Feedback I've received from parents includes that I'm a "gifted teacher," a "positive role model," and that I "really got through to" their child. I am personable, encouraging, creative, and kind. I have met wonderful students through Wyzant and look forward to meeting more. If you want to boost your child's (or your own) understanding, proficiency, enjoyment, and confidence in math, please message me.

Acting

Hi! I'm a professional actor with an MFA in Acting from the American Conservatory Theater and a BA in Theater from Brown University. I have acted in over 25 professional union stage productions, including Broadway and Off-Broadway, and I have film and TV credits as well. I have studied with some of the best teachers in NYC and was often an exemplary student for their approach to the craft. If you are looking for help with an audition, monologue, job, or even a script you are working on, I'd love to work with you!
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 is a crucial step for all students on their journey through mathematics. It's where things start getting both complicated and fun. It's been a privilege to tutor students at this level and to strengthen their confidence and performance in math. As I help them to understand concepts more fully, they are able to experience the creativity and fun that math has to offer.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I thank my Algebra 2 teacher for getting me pumped about math when I was 15. It was in this class that I really started having fun and "geeking out" about math. It was also at this time that my friends started asking me for help. I have been tutoring this subject and the SAT (which has its fair share of Algebra 2) for years. Am here to help!
Geometry

Geometry

Especially if you are a visual learner, Geometry can be one of the most satisfying subjects in math. As in any math subject, Geometry builds on itself. We will make sure you are clear on basic concepts so you can move through material with confidence and ease. Geometry will definitely show up on the SAT and other standardized tests, so getting some extra help to solidify your understanding will benefit you even further than your current goals!
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I've tutored many students in Prealgebra, and it is a privilege to start working with them at this level. When students lack support at this level and don't fully understand applications, they can lose confidence quickly and fall behind. One-on-one tutoring allows me to find exactly where the student needs support, practice, or another way to understand a concept. I am a clear, kind, and effective teacher, and I love working with students at this age and level.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I've tutored SAT Math prep for many years, and it's clear - if you are willing to put in the time, your score will improve significantly. When a student solidifies their understanding of concepts and applications, they can then apply them flexibly, and they will find themselves less thrown when encountering a tricky question on this test. We'll improve test taking strategy and overall performance in all subjects covered on this test. I'll assign practice tests and supplemental material tailored to the student's needs, and we will get a score they can be truly proud of.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry can seem intimidating at first, with new terms and graphs and even greek letters! But getting a firm handle on the building blocks is not as complicated as it seems. From there, the subject gets more interesting, maybe even fun. This is one of the first subjects I tutored when I was fresh out of college, and I have always enjoyed teaching it since.

Amazing tutor!

We have had several sessions with Allison for my three kids. Each one of my kids is a different learner and Allison knew how to approach them, despite their different styles. She was kind, patient, knowledgeable and funny! This kept the kids engaged throughout the class. I give her the highest possible recommendation!

Allison is the best!

Allison has been such a great help to Franny, we are very happy to have found her. She's been very accommodating to take the travel time to do in person sessions and Franny is feeling more confident about her algebra already!
