Hey! My name is Thomas, and I am a calculus tutor with two years of math tutoring experience at Mathnasium Learning Center. There, I worked with students from grades K to 12, both one-on-one and in groups, to help them achieve lasting comprehension across a range of topics and to excel in their coursework.
In high school, I completed both Calculus I and II, and later completed Calculus I again during my undergraduate coursework. I also had the opportunity to work one-on-one with a college student who has cerebral palsy, helping him to complete Khan Academy calculus lessons and then later scribing and tutoring for both Calculus I & II.
Although calculus may initially seem overwhelming, I hope to show students that once they develop a good grasp of the basic concepts and rules, problems can quickly become fun and intuitive to solve, and that the course can go from a very frustrating one to a very enjoyable one.
My academic background is in neuroscience and psychology, with a Bachelor’s degree in Neurobiology from Georgetown University and Master’s degrees in Neuroscience and Psychology from Stony Brook University. Math has been central to both my education and career path and I have found it incredibly rewarding when I can share that with others and see them make real breakthroughs with their own understanding.
As a tutor, I step into my students’ shoes to identify and target specific skills or concepts that may be causing them difficulty. My aim is always to create a relaxed, comfortable setting where they are encouraged to make and learn from mistakes. My view is that no subject is ever too challenging to understand as long as you have a good teacher who can communicate the ideas to you simply and clearly.
Prior to a lesson, I ask students to send over a copy of their work or a brief outline of the topics that they hope to work on. The needs of my students and their guardians is always the top priority for me, so never hesitate to contact me with any questions that may come up or to schedule a session!
