About Pietro

Having tutored in the past, I can tell you that is it a richly rewarding experience. I enjoy helping students understand what they're working on. Often I find that the knowledge is there; one just needs to bring it out. To this end, I never just give an answer; I work with the student to help him or her get to the answer him/her self, and then I check to make sure he or she fully understands why they obtained the answer they did. When I was tutoring a seventh-grader in January in mathematics, I created over 100 problems for him to work on, so that he could master operations with negative numbers, including decimals and fractions. Over the course of five weeks, I helped him with homework, and his performance improved, along with his willingness to do math.
As an Eagle Scout, I will strive to be as helpful, friendly, and cheerful as possible with my students. I know that during the summer, some may be loathe to do work, especially on bright, sunny days, but I will do my best to make each session as fun as possible, perhaps working outside on a patio when the weather is good. I attend Vassar College, where I intend to double-major in physics and astronomy, and minor in mathematics. I am involved in various musical groups on campus, as I was in high school, and I work for Campus Patrol, walking the dorms to make sure that students are safe.

I have previous experience tutoring in prealgebra, and I have helped my sister with Algebra I on numerous occasions. As stated above, I am pursuing a minor in mathematics. I have completed multivariable calculus and linear algebra while in college.

I am majoring in Physics and Astronomy, and I love science. I scored really high on my science Regents exams, took College Astronomy in high school, and next semester will be taking modern physics and stellar astrophysics.

Please don't hesitate to contact me and get to know me better. I'm flexible with hours, and I always like meeting new people.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I took AP United States History in high school, completing detailed outlines of almost 40 chapters of "The American Pageant", most of which I still have with me. I scored a 5 on the AP exam and a 100 on the US History Regents Exam.
I can help with all eras of American history, from precolonial days to the American Revolution and the Constitution, on to the War of 1812 and westward expansion, to the Civil War and Gilded Age; from the labor movement, Sherman and Clayton Anti-trust Acts, and the Roosevelt and Taft presidencies, to WWI and the Roaring Twenties, on to the Great Depression and WWII, to the Korean and Vietnam Wars; from the civil rights movement and space race to Watergate and the Reagan Revolution, and from there on up to the present day.
I know how to write good essays, and I know how to improve others' writing. I am good at analyzing documents for document-based essays, and know how to prepare students for this and thematic essays. I can tutor for all levels of American History, including elementary, middle school, and high school, AP, Honors, or Regents, and I am able to do Regents and AP exam preparation.

Astronomy

I am studying physics and astronomy at Vassar College. I earned the Astronomy and Space Exploration Merit Badges at Scout Camp, and I have been reading books on astronomy since I was a little kid. I took College Astronomy in high school, and I scored a 100 on this site's qualifying test. This year I completed Fundamentals of Physics at Vassar, and next semester I will be taking Modern Physics and Stellar Astrophysics.
As you can see, I love astronomy. I'd like to make a career out of studying black holes. I can't wait to start tutoring in this subject.

Biology

Biology is a very interesting science, encompassing all life on Earth, from the basic, prokaryotic organisms like bacteria to very complex organisms, such as humans, as well as cells, viruses, genetics, and other topics. As a tutor in this subject, I will employ methods to help pupils remember the material, such as flashcards and acronyms (King Phillip Can Order Familiar Good Singers- Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species), as well as employing Regentsprep.org, past Regents examinations, and, when possible, Castle Learning.

Clarinet

I have been playing the clarinet for nine years. I have performed in my high school's concert band, all-county concert band (Orange County, NY), and in the Vassar College Wind Ensemble. I also played clarinet in my high school's jazz ensemble, and at Mass every Sunday with the Vassar Catholic Community Choir and Instrumentalists. I have taken lessons for credit while at Vassar with Mr. Larry Guy, a renowned musician who has held principal chair in several ensembles, and who teaches at Julliard and the Manhattan School of Music. He has taught me a lot, and I would like to pass everything I learned on to other musicians learning the art of clarinet.

Elementary Math

Often it seems that with math, students just need some small prodding or a reminder, and then they can figure out the rest. If I can tutor in pre-algebra, elementary math should be no problem; I will simply adjust my methods accordingly. As Assistant Senior Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader of my Boy Scout troop, I have worked with fellow Scouts between the ages of 10 and 17, so I have no problem working with students of any age.

Prealgebra

This past January, I tutored a student who was struggling in pre-algebra. He was having a hard time with homework and operations with negative integers. For about an hour a week for five weeks, I helped him come up with the answers on his own, and made sure he fully understood each problem. I also created over 100 problems involving basic operations with positive and negative integers and decimals for him to work on. He improved in the subject and enjoys it more.
Often it seems that with math, students just need some small prodding or a reminder, and then they can figure out the rest. I will do everything I can to ensure that students fully understand the concepts of pre-algebra, and to prepare them for Algebra I.

Public Speaking

I have a lot of experience with public speaking. I participated in the Liturgy of the Word at my Confirmation Mass, and have said many blessings at large family gatherings. I earned the Communications Merit Badge, which has a public speaking requirement. While serving as Senior Patrol Leader of my troop, I was the Master of Ceremonies for four Courts of Honor, where Scouts are given the merit badges and patches they earned and advanced in rank.
I gave speeches when running for National Honor Society President, Science Honor Society President, and president of my dorm at college. The National Honor Society Speech was made up completely as I went along, and I managed to get elected. I also served as Master of Ceremonies for the National Honor Society Induction.
As a tutor in this subject, I will coach my students in proper dynamics, articulation, eye contact with the audience, and overcoming stage-fright, as well how to recover if one gets lost while giving a speech. Lessons will include reciting speeches for practice
I thoroughly enjoy public speaking, and I can't wait to start preparing others for this challenging yet richly rewarding experience.

Regents

As I attended high school in New York, I had to take these exams from grades eight to eleven. I took the Living Environment (95), Integrated Algebra (84), Earth Science (98), Geometry (83), English (91), Chemistry (87). Algebra II and Trigonometry (88), Spanish (93), Global Studies (98), Physics (95), and US History (100) Regents Exams. In addition, I have taken six AP exams, which are much more difficult than the Regents Exams, and have passed all of them.

A few months ago, I attempted a Living Environment Regents Exam, just to see how much I remembered from five years ago, and I scored in the lower 90s. I retained much of the information I learned in high school, and am capable of preparing students for these exams, including tips on how to remember formulas, or how to write better DBQ essays.
