Greetings parents and students,

I graduated with an AS in Science with an emphasis in Physics and Education from SUNY Orange, a BS in Geology from SUNY New Paltz, and a Masters Degree in Adolescent Education. My teaching certifications are in Earth Science and General Science. My research as an undergraduate involved analyzing the geometry of geologic structures, along with the chemistry of the rocks, in order to determine inferred depositional environments. With my knowledge and experience, I help students learn and master the sciences of the physical world. I tutor Geology, Physics, Astronomy, and Chemistry. Aptitude in advanced mathematics is a requirement in my field, which is why I include math tutoring in my services. I am currently employed as and Earth Science Teacher in my home district.

Generally when tutoring I recognize what each students individual needs are and I help them practice effective studying methods based on various educational-psychological studies, as well my own experiences as a successful college graduate. After first meeting a student I quickly assess what prerequisite knowledge they may be lacking, so that I can integrate the prerequisite instruction into learning the current material efficiently. I take great pride in getting to know my students and their interests, as this enables me to teach them more effectively. After being tutored by me, I assure that not only will each student be more competent in the subject they are troubled with, but they will have learned valuable studying and learning techniques that will help them in the future along with the confidence they need to be successful.
I believe in a fun yet hard-working learning environment based on the individual needs of each student, which is why I have been one of the most successful tutors in my region.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I have an AS in Physics and a BS in Geology, with a Masters in Science Education. I am a NYS certified teacher. In my degree path I have taken up to college level Calculus, as Physics and Geology are heavily math dependent. Due to the requirements of my degree, I had to be proficient in college level mathematics and have tutored over 900 hours of algebra alone. I use various visual and auditory aides in order help learners of various learning needs to effectively master material, in line with the most recent educational research.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have an AS in Science with a concentration in Physics and a BSc in Geology with a minor in Geochemistry. In my degree path I have taken college level Calculus, as physics and geology are heavily math dependent. I have tutored various forms of math and science, with over 900 hours in tutoring algebra alone.
American History

American History

I am a student currently working on my degree in Teaching Certification. I have an extensive background in college history as that was at one time my area of study. I specialize in essay writing, which is critical for success in History classes. My methods will include Document Based Question (DBQ) analysis, general history review and Essay Writing practice in order to prepare students for their History Regents Exams.
Astronomy

Astronomy

I have an AS degree in Science with a concentration in Physics, and a Bachelor's degree in Geology. I am currently finishing my Masters in Earth Science Education. While studying physics, Astronomy and Astrophysics were a major focus for me. I have also been an amateur astronomer for 15 years. Astronomy is merely the application of Physics and Trigonometry to interpret the behavior of objects too far to study directly. There is nothing more fascinating than space and the mechanics that drive all we see when we look up in the sky. I like to imagine Galileo thinking the same thing when he shook the paradigm by doing nothing more than seeing Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto through a crude lens.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I am a NYS certified teacher with a Masters in Adolescent Education. I have over 4 years experience teaching in inclusive classrooms. I have worked with many students on the Autism Spectrum, specifically students with Asperger's. My profession requires me to adhere to IEPs and 504 plans, where I accommodate students with testing and sensory deficits.
Chemistry

Chemistry

I have an AS degree in Physics and a BS in Geology with a minor in Geochemistry. Some of my research as a geologist included analyzing and determining the aqueous geochemistry of groundwater collected from both confined and unconfined aquifers. Ground water quality and contamination analysis was the focus of the research. Though out my years as a tutor, I have closely studied the regents chemistry curriculum, and have successfully prepped students for regents chemistry for over 3 years. I also tutor college-level chemistry 1 and 2, as well as mineralogy/crystallography.
Common Core

Common Core

Since the New Common Core curriculum was introduced, I have studied the new Common Core methodology of problem solving extensively, to assure my students get the full benefit of my services. I have tutored over 600 hours of Common Core alone. The methods of Common Core prove challenging for many students, so they need quality one on one instruction by someone who understands why it is important to learn these concepts. Common core teaches the students a critical thinking approach to problem solving, which is more applicable in the real world.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I received my AS degree in Science with a concentration in Physics and my BS in Geology at SUNY New Paltz. In my degree programs, I have been successful in collegiate Calculus. I have also been tutoring Mathematics for over 5 years.
Elementary Science

Elementary Science

I have an AS degree in Science with a concentration in Physics, and a BS in Geology. I have extensive experience working with children. Several of my current students are elementary students. I find the best way to engage children is by involving the important subject matter with their personal interests, keeping the lesson fun but hard working.
English

English

As a requirement of my college, every student must take Freshman English 1 and 2. I passed both with a 3.0 or B. I am also transferring into Education Certification which means I must be proficient in English by New York State Law. I have the most experience tutoring writing.
GED

GED

I have tutored various high school courses. I am currently working on acquiring my teaching certification in Science. My degree in physics was very math intensive.
Geography

Geography

I have a Bachelors of Science in Geology, with most of my research requiring me to traverse a variety of locations and terrain. I have done intensive field mapping, studied regional landscapes from all over the world, and have worked extensively with ArcGIS Geographic Information Systems.
Geology

Geology

Geology is a study of the structure and composition of the Earth. World historians find what they seek in doctrines, while I find my evidence by going back into the archives of the bentonite-laden Devonian siltstone or by slicing up a granite to age-date it using Zircon. I help students with lower and upper level geology courses. Much of my research has been in the Sequence Stratigraphy and Sedimentary Petrology of the Eastern North American margin during the Middle Paleozoic, as well as its metamorphic petrology, with my most recent research resulting in two publications and presentations at the Geological Society of America's September 2016 and March 2017 conferences. Some of my other research has been on the igneous/metamorphic petrology of the Grenville Orogeny, specifically by studying Storm King Mountain granitic gneiss and amphibolite. I tutor undergraduate Introductory Geology, Stratigraphy/Sedimentology, Petrology and Structural Geology, and teach Earth Science.
Geometry

Geometry

I have an AS in Physics and a BS in Geology, with a Masters in Science Education. I am a NYS certified teacher. In Geology, Geometry is a fundamental skill, especially in mineralogy. I have been tutoring mathematics for over 7 years, with specialization in regents geometry prep. For geometry test prep, it is essential to focus on proof-writing as all concepts branch off from there. I implement various visual and auditory aides in order to accommodate varying learning styles, as geometry is learned best visually.
Physical Science

Physical Science

I graduated with an AS degree in Science with a concentration in Physics and a BS in Geology. The basic Components of Physical Science is Physics, Chemistry and Astronomy. I have had great success in taking all of these subjects in college for both of my degree paths and have been an amateur astronomer for over 10 years. I currently tutor Earth Science and physics and so Physical science would be an area of expertise for me.

Regents

Regents

I graduated with an AS in physics, a BS in Geology and a Masters in Science Education. I am a NYS certified teacher who almost exclusively teaches Regents. My methods for Regents prep include using copies of old New York State Regents Exams which are provided by the school district to review material and break down effective test taking skills with the students. I tutor Regents Earth Science, Regents Physics, Regents Chemistry, Regents Geometry, Regents Algebra 1 and Regents Algebra 2/Trigonometry.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I took and did well on my SAT Math section in high school. I have an AS degree in Science with a concentration in Physics and a BS in Geology. In my degree path I have taken up to college level Calculus, as Physics and Geology are heavily math dependent. I have tutored various forms of Math and Science, with over 900 hours tutoring Math alone. Over the years I have closely studied the evolution of how the SAT examinations are set up. With each student I will begin by working on their general high school/pre-collegiate Math skills as well as go over practice SAT exams with them, followed by administering a final practice SAT examination of which I will go over with them.
Social Studies

Social Studies

I am a college graduate. I have taken college level US history, Western European History, and Renaissance. I have also taken various Sociology and Psychology classes as required by my degree program in education certification. I have past experience tutoring social studies.

Spelling

I am a High School Regents diploma graduate. As a part of my college degree requirements, I needed to take a year of college level English. I am certainly more than capable of tutoring Spelling to Elementary/Junior High/High School students.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

I have an AS in Science with a concentration in Physics and a BS in Geology. In my degree path I have taken up to college level Calculus, as Physics and Geology are heavily math dependent. In my pursuit for my degree in physics, my skills in trigonometry was a vital skill and is used in calculating all things in the universe. Trigonometry is well within my ability to tutor. "Trigonometry is a sine of the times" - Author Unknown Many take for granted how much easier a solid background in trigonometry makes everyday life. You may respond, "How much easier?'' My response would simply be that you already use it with out knowing. Every time you make an estimate on whether your car would fit through an underpass when driving, you are using trigonometry. Whenever you decide to cut straight through a field to save time as opposed to walking around it on the sidewalk, you are using trigonometry. Shooting the basketball perfectly into the net is simply Trigonometry. Many of these concepts are already wired into logical thought, it just takes a bit of ''self reflection'' (my phrase for the study of Mathematics) and an enthusiastic instructor to bring it out onto paper.
Writing

Writing

As a college graduate, and published scientist, I am a very proficient writer. I can communicate to students how to articulate thought on to paper, in a concise, logical manner. I have tutored an array of writing techniques from formal SAT essay writing, to argumentative thesis writing. The style of writing I have tutored the most however, is writing for abstracts and scientific publications.

Good Tutor

Being a good tutor is more than knowing the subject matter in which you are tutoring, it is also about being creative, personable, engaging and patient. If you do not have these traits, your knowledge of the subject matter alone will serve little or no purpose as a tutor/teacher. My son was very apprehensive about working with a tutor, even a little nervous. When we met Michael, he immediately made my son and I feel very comfortable. He was also able to quickly assess where my son was weakest, without me telling him much, and proceeded to patiently work with him to improve his math skills in those areas. Michael also showed my son different and creative ways to understand and solve the equations that he was working on. The second visit was even better than the first, as my son was eagerly anticipating his tutoring session. I am very pleased and thankful for the improvement in confidence and knowledge of the subject matter that my son has displayed over the first two weeks. Michael has been a great help and I would recommend him highly.
