I am a Curtis and Juilliard trained cellist with 30 years of performing internationally as a soloist. I have taught privately for the past 20 years and also teach at Columbia University. I have helped my cello students reach their goals whether it be winning scholarships to the finest conservatories and music departments in the country or receiving awards in competitions. Because of the pandemic I have much more time to devote to teaching and am excited to be expanding my studio.
As a graduate of The Curtis Institute of Music (Bachelor of Music, 1989) and The Juilliard School of Music (Master of Music, 1991), I have led a rich and varied international career as a New York City-based cellist for over 25 years. Specializing in both traditional and contemporary music, I regularly collaborate with leading artists and cultural institutions as both a soloist and chamber musician. In my career as a soloist, I have been fortunate to have composers such as Philip Glass and Tan Dun write pieces exclusively for my use. Apart from this work, I frequently perform with The New York Philharmonic and The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. Additionally, I have recorded many critically acclaimed albums such as Songs and Poems for Solo Cello; and Glass: Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 1.
Within my experience as an educator, I have served on the faculties of Columbia University and have given frequent master classes at New York University. I have also taught at the Juilliard Pre-College and maintain my own private studio in New York City. Many of my private students have received acceptances at the Yale School of Music, The Juilliard School, and the like. Additionally, I created the instrumental training program for The Bang on a Can Summer Institute at MASS MoCA in 2001, a model they still actively use today.
