Hi! My name is Akshat, and I am a Computer Science and Applied Physics college student studying at Columbia University's School of Engineering and Applied Science. In general, the most engaging classes are those where the instructors are most passionate about their field and show excitement in their lectures. In my experience, these classes were mainly STEM classes. When comparing teachers that have an impact in the classroom and those who do not, I find that the teachers who do not engage their students tend to make students memorize concepts while not explaining the underlying reasons for why they are correct. In doing this, the students will only retain information for an upcoming quiz or test but cannot apply it in a future exam, other relevant classes, or even in real life. I try to learn from my experience, and when teaching, I will explain why the concept works. In addition, I will try to make the lectures more engaging and often use real-life examples to introduce the topic to show why it is important. All of my good instructors engaged the class and truly made learning an enjoyable experience. I try to bring these experiences into my tutoring sessions to give the tutees a fun experience while learning and retaining subject material.

I have seven years of both group and individual tutoring. I first started tutoring competitive math for elementary and middle school students, and some of my students went on to win local and state tournaments. Here, I taught Prealgebra, Algebra I, Geometry, Probability, and Number Theory. In school, I tutored math ranging from Algebra I to AP Calculus BC and all of the AP Physics subjects. One of my tutees started in Geometry with a low B. After engaging them with conceptual reasons why a proof is correct and showing how each step of the proof fits, they understood how to think about and tackle Geometry questions. At the end of the semester, they were able to pull her low B up to a solid A!

Approved Subjects

ACT Math

ACT Math

The ACT Math exam is not particularly difficult in subject matter. The topics tested on the ACT are those you learn in high school, such as Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Probability. If you have trouble in any of these subjects, practice is your best friend, and getting familiar with the subject will save you time on the test. What gets most students is timing. I have taken many standardized tests and competitions that I have earned distinction on, and I can share test-taking strategies that will help you move through the test faster with more efficiency.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Algebra is the base to learn higher-level math subjects, such as Geometry and Calculus. Algebra I students I have tutored in private and group classes have went on to win local and state math competitions.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

Algebra is the base to learn higher-level math subjects, such as Geometry and Calculus. Algebra II students I have tutored in private and group classes have went on to win local and state math competitions.
Calculus

Calculus

I have had the pleasure of tutoring Calculus students at my high school. Calculus is an extension of algebra, and once a student fully understands a topic in Algebra (e.g., slope), they will have a greater understanding of the corresponding topic in Calculus (in this case, derivatives).
Geometry

Geometry

Geometry differs from most other math subjects because it requires more visualization. My students tell me that this aspect of Geometry is the most difficult, but it can be trained by lots of practice. Geometry is also a unique subject because students who are good in Algebra can struggle in Geometry and vice versa. Geometry students I have tutored in private and group classes have went on to win local and state math competitions.
Java

Java

I have programmed in Java and Java-based Languages for the last 3 years, and scored a 5 on the AP Computer Science A Exam.
Physics

Physics

I have taken all of the AP Physics subjects and self studied Calculus-based Physics and received a maximum score of 5 on the exam. I am also one in about 300 to qualify for the US Physics Olympiad out of over 6000 test takers. At school, I have tutored both Algebra and Physics-based Calculus at honors and AP level for the past 4 years, and use a common-sense approach to help students understand why the math behind the Physics actually works. Once they understand the real-life implications, understanding and remembering the equations becomes a lot easier.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is an introduction of multiple topics which lay the foundation of Algebra and is the base to learn higher-level math subjects, such as Geometry and Calculus. Prealgebra students I have tutored have won local and state math competitions.
Precalculus

Precalculus

I have had the pleasure of tutoring many Precalculus students at my high school and for competitions. Precalculus will lay the foundation to learn Calculus by expanding on topics in Algebra, Geometry, and Trigonometry, and incorporates these with limits, the basis of Calculus. Precalculus students I have tutored have won local and state math competitions.
Python

Python

I have programmed in Python for the last 3 years and am knowledgeable in data and visualization packages such as Numpy, Matplotlib, Pandas, Bokeh, Flask, and others.
SAT Math

SAT Math

The SAT Math exam are not particularly difficult in subject matter. The topics tested on the SAT are those you learn in high school, such as Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Probability. If you have trouble in any of these subjects, practice is your best friend, and getting familiar with the subject will save you time on the test. What gets most students is timing. I have taken many standardized tests and competitions that I have earned distinction on, and I can share test-taking strategies that will help you more through the test faster with more efficiency.
Trigonometry

Trigonometry

Trigonometry is an extension of Geometry that requires more Algebra. Just with the other STEM subjects, more “smart” practice will improve your trigonometry skills. During your practice, it is important to understand why you got a problem wrong, because it is hard to get around not knowing a concept in Trigonometry. When starting out in this subject, I also struggled because I could not visualize the problems properly, but through working through many problems and realizing my mistakes, I could not only succeed in the classroom, but also in local, state, and national competitions.

Knowledgeable, patient, and kind

Akshat is absolutely fantastic. His understanding of topics in relation to math or physics is fantastic, and more importantly he's comfortable reviewing/learning topics that maybe he himself has not worked with in a while in his best effort to assist you. I struggled at first with the idea of having one on one tutoring sessions out of fear of being embarrassed of my struggling but Akshat made me feel very comfortable with his instruction, and help and as a result my grade has really improved. He's also a great communicator, willing to go over topics again or rework things that maybe don't click the first time. Stellar experience so far, 10/10

Very knowledgeable tutor!

Akshat helped me review physics concepts that I was struggling on, and he was very efficient in helping me gain a better understanding of the problems. I definitely recommend Akshat for anyone that needs physics taught to them in a simplified manner. He is very knowledgeable and takes the time to make sure that you thoroughly understand the concept, and is very nice and patient as well. One of the best tutors I have come across!
