About May

Bio

I recently graduated from Columbia University with a bachelor’s degree in Cognitive Science and Evolutionary Biology. My academic focus was on how people learn, how attention works, and how to break down complex ideas in a way that actually sticks. Before Columbia, I earned four associate degrees from San Diego City College with a 4.0 GPA and graduated with honors. My strongest subjects have always been math and English, and those are the areas I built most of my teaching experience in.

I have been tutoring for about fifteen years, working with students from kindergarten through college. I’ve taught in one-on-one settings, small groups, and classroom environments. I also worked as an ABA therapist, which required me to support students with ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other learning differences. Because I have ADHD myself, I’m able to spot where students get stuck and adjust the lesson in a way that keeps them engaged and reduces frustration. I’ve created individualized study plans, taught foundational reading and math skills, supported middle school and high school coursework, and helped college students organize and complete writing assignments.

My approach is straightforward: I figure out how a student learns best, break material into manageable steps, and keep the pace steady without adding pressure. I’ve worked with students who needed long-term academic support and others who just needed help mastering a specific topic. Over the years I’ve developed methods that work well for visual learners, students who need repetition, and students who need a faster, more structured approach. My goal is always the same; clear explanations, steady progress, and helping students feel capable in subjects that once felt overwhelming.

Accent Reduction

Accent Reduction

I help students improve clarity, rhythm, and natural flow when speaking American English. My background in cognitive science and linguistics gives me a strong understanding of how speech perception and production work in the brain, which helps me break skills down into practical steps. I focus on real, usable changes, like intonation, stress patterns, pacing, and sound formation, so students feel more confident in everyday conversations. My approach is supportive, structured, and based on how people actually learn new speech habits.
ADHD

ADHD

I have extensive experience supporting students with ADHD, both as a former ABA clinician and as a long-time tutor working with learners from early elementary through college. I hold two degrees from Columbia University—Cognitive Science and Evolutionary Biology, both which inform my understanding of attention, executive function, and learning strategies. Over the past 15 years, I’ve helped students build effective study habits, manage distractions, and develop personalized approaches that fit the way their brains work. I focus on practical, manageable tools that help students stay engaged, organized, and confident in their academic work.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I’ve been tutoring Algebra 1 for about 15 years and have worked with students of all levels, including those who struggle with math or have learning differences. I focus on making concepts clear and manageable by breaking problems into simple steps and showing why each method works. I’ve helped students build confidence, improve grades, and strengthen their foundational skills for higher-level math. My approach is patient, direct, and tailored to the way each student learns best.
Anthropology

Anthropology

I hold a degree in Evolutionary Biology of the Human Species from Columbia University, which is the anthropology program focused on human evolution and behavior. My coursework covered primatology, human evolution, cultural anthropology, biological variation, and the foundations of human societies. I have taught and tutored students in these topics by breaking down complex ideas into clear, practical steps. I help students connect theories to real-world examples so the material feels logical and easy to follow.
Clarinet

Clarinet

I played the clarinet for about ten years, starting when I was ten and continuing through high school and into college ensembles. I work well with beginners who need clear, simple guidance as they get used to the instrument. I focus on the core skills that help someone improve early on, like breath control, embouchure, finger placement, and reading music. My goal is to help new players feel comfortable and build confidence as they learn.
Genetics

Genetics

I completed a degree in Evolutionary Biology of the Human Species at Columbia University, where I studied human genetics, inheritance patterns, population genetics, and the molecular basis of variation. I have taken upper-level coursework focused on how genes shape human traits, disease risk, and evolutionary change. I have helped students understand complex concepts by breaking them down into manageable steps and using real examples from human biology. My goal is to make genetics feel clear, logical, and approachable for anyone who wants to strengthen their understanding.
Neuroscience

Neuroscience

I hold a degree in Cognitive Science from Columbia University with a specialization in the neuroscience of visual perception and brain systems. My coursework and research focused on how different regions of the brain process information, how neural circuits develop, and how behavior connects to underlying biology. I have helped students understand complex topics by breaking down pathways, functions, and mechanisms in a way that feels straightforward instead of overwhelming. I aim to make neuroscience feel organized, practical, and understandable for anyone building their foundation in the subject.
