About Charles

Bio

I am an expert in-person and online writing tutor who has tutored for Wyzant.com since 2014. I also show students how to write cursive letters.

Natalie, a college student in California, told me, “The paper you helped me write on the audio-book boom raised my grade from C minus to a B. My professor liked my paper and said, ‘Nice improvement on your APA in-text citations and references. Nice job paraphrasing! Only a 13% similarity report, down from 30%. My first master’s degree is in political science, my second master's degree is in creative writing. I also completed two-thirds of a Ph.D, taught political science full-time at Southwest Early College High School and at South Texas College, both in Texas. At Borough of Manhattan Community College, I taught Composition 101. In 2022, I wrote, edited, and published “Speak and Write Concisely”. In 2024, I expanded it and to highlight the new advances in computer-assisted writing apps, specially the speech-to-text apps that type what you say to them so you can use more energy to articulate and compose your paper, I updated my book's title to “Write Talking”. The latest edition will be out in one week, I renamed it "Write Perfectly". Amazon.com sells my books.

Writing Tip 1
Look at each word in a sentence and ask yourself: Does that word help that sentence work? If it doesn’t help it work—delete it.
Look for and delete any obvious words.
Identify each word or phrase you repeated. If you don’t want to repeat it, delete it.

Writing Tip 2
When you’re writing and are not ready to choose which word or phrase to use, between every two items, insert a semicolon, as in [ abundant; ample; copious, many ].
When you’re ready to choose the best word or phrase, strike through (strike through) the ones you will not use, and delete them, as in [ abundant; ample; copious, many ].

Common Core

Common Core

I have extensive experience instructing students based on the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) framework, especially in English Language Arts (ELA) and in writing. My academic background, which includes a master's degree in political science, an MFA in Creative Writing, and two-thirds of a Ph.D., gives me a deep, specialized understanding of the advanced reading comprehension, critical thinking, and writing skills that are the foundation of Common Core State Standards at all levels. My teaching experience includes practical expertise in implementing CCSS in diverse settings. I taught 12th grade at Southwest Early College High School in Texas, where the curriculum aligned with college-readiness standards (a key goal of CCSS). As a substitute teacher, I gained hands-on experience working directly in CCSS environments, assisting the teachers of record across almost every K–12 grade level from 2017 to 2018 at IDEA Public School in Texas and again in 2021 at various New York City public and charter schools. I am an expert at translating the Common Core Standards into practical lessons that empower students to master the foundational reading and writing skills, along with the critical thinking, analysis, and problem-solving skills essential for long-term academic and college success.
Creative Writing

Creative Writing

I love words because they are magical, and I have an extraordinary imagination and know how to apply it to write all sorts of fascinating stories, especially comedies . In 2014, I began tutoring writing for Wyzant.com, and in 2018 I completed my MFA in Creative Writing at Full Sail University. There I learned all the skills a writer needs to know to write fiction, and I will be happy to teach you or your son or daughter all I know about that marvelous skill. I love writing so much, and I love to teach people how to write so much that I wrote a book titled "Speak and Write Concisely" and published it in 2021. Since then I keep expanding it and the new 300-page edition will be available from Amazon.com in one month.
Drawing

Drawing

I drew the human body for about 10-years, have taught pastel portrait drawing to a small group of people, have an associate degree in illustration from Parsons School of Design (NYC), and have done illustrations published in newspapers, magazines, and a medical book.

"Wow, great job!" Natalie's teacher wrote her. "Nice improvement on your in-text citations and references done in APA format. Nice job paraphrasing! Nice job answering the prompt, as well. Thoughtful, well-rounded responses to the questions. Truly a very nice paper." Natalie earned a grade of 98% on that paper, it was on the audiobook boom. Natalie told me: "The last paper you helped me with raised my grade from a low C to a B in the class. Thank you so much!"
Handwriting

Handwriting

My mother taught me to draw circles, then "n" shapes, then "m" shapes, then "e" shapes, then lower case "L" shapes, then "i" shapes, then I eventually used all of them to draw letters. Writing cursive letters is drawing. And I am also a talented artist and illustrator. So, helping young children learn to write the shapes that make letters and the letters themselves remind me of those beautiful times with my mother, then of my own adventures in Kindergarten, then first grade, and the subsequent grades where I applied what my mother taught me—the basic shapes of letters. The basics.
Homeschool

Homeschool

I have been tutoring for 11 years and I specialize in delivering engaging and effective instruction across all core academic subjects for students in grades K–8. First, I design and customize comprehensive lesson plans that not only meet state and national academic standards but are also meticulously tailored to your child’s individual learning style and specific interests. Second, I seamlessly integrate hands-on activities and real-world applications to make learning meaningful, memorable, and relevant to their daily lives. Third, I prioritize transparent communication and accountability; I provide families with regular, detailed progress reports and use data-driven methods to track student performance toward clearly defined academic milestones.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I have worked as a proofreader for decades, proofreading magazine and newspaper articles, and I am an expert proofreader of academic papers for master's and Ph.D. programs. Proofreading is also a central component when tutoring writing, and I first tutored writing for Wyzant six years ago. I love to proofread. It's like a treasure hunt.
Spanish

Spanish

I am a native speaker of Spanish, love it, and speak it daily with my family and friends. I produced commercials for WXTV-41 NY, the Spanish language television station, worked as a Spanish-language radio announcer, wrote and published Spanish and bilingual magazines, and love to teach students how to speak Spanish fluently. "Saludos, Carlos"
Writing

Writing

Helping people learn to write better is what I love to do the most. In 2014, I began tutoring for Wyzant.com in-person by helping an NYU student write her Master's dissertation. After a long hiatus, a break from tutoring, I taught English Composition 101 at Borough of Manhattan Community College to multilingual writers. Now I am happy to be tutoring English and writing on-line. One of my students is an amazing 7th grader who lives in California and who I help with his English homework Mondays and Thursdays, and sometimes even other days; another student I tutor is a Ph.D. student in New Jersey who is writing a 90-page dissertation with my help. I love to teach as many people as possible how to write better. I will be delighted to help your son or daughter, or you, learn some simple but powerful writing skills.
