About Cole

Bio

Finding something meaningful to say—and expressing it in your own voice—is often the hardest part of a college application. I help students turn their experiences and ideas into thoughtful, specific essays.

I’m Cole, a Harvard graduate with a master’s degree from Oxford, where I studied on a full scholarship and subsequently taught Ancient Greek. My background in philosophy and classics shapes my approach: careful questions, close reading, and clear, practical feedback.

We can work together on personal statements, supplemental essays, and application planning. If you’re starting from scratch, we’ll explore possible topics and develop a promising direction. If you already have a draft, we’ll examine its structure, substance, and language while preserving your voice.

Our first working session focuses on your most pressing need. Depending on where you’re starting, the aim might be a workable outline, a stronger opening, or a prioritized revision plan. You’ll understand what to work on next and why.

My students’ reviews highlight clear explanations, thoughtful feedback, engaging lessons, and increased confidence. I also teach academic writing, SAT/ACT reading and English skills, Latin, and Ancient Greek.

I offer a free 30-minute consultation for first-time students to discuss their goals and see whether we’re a good fit. Message me with what you’re working on and your next deadline.

Approved Subjects

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

In high school, I had a 5.14/4.0 weighted GPA, scored 1540/1600 on the SAT, and scored a 5 on 8 AP Exams, including AP Calc AB/BC, Stats, and Physics A/B. At Harvard and Oxford, I specialized in studying Logic and logical fallacies in Plato and Aristotle's philosophy. I have over 200 hours of experience helping kids with math -- which I mainly do as a hobby, because I enjoy teaching, and to keep my analytic skills sharp :)
Classics

Classics

I studied Classics at Harvard College, then did my Master's in Ancient Philosophy at the University of Oxford, then taught Ancient Greek and Philosophy at Harris Manchester and Jesus Colleges at Oxford after graduation for three years. I have taught classics for over ten years.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I studied at Harvard, completed my master's degree at Oxford, and subsequently taught at Oxford. For more than 10 years, I have advised applicants as a college application counselor. I guide students through building balanced school lists and discovering their unique student narrative. My goal is to help each applicant present an honest, specific account of who they are and what they will bring to campus.
English

English

I earned my undergraduate degree at Harvard and my graduate degree at Oxford, and I have taught and coached writing for over ten years, including work on the Common Application, personal statement, and school-specific supplements.
Essay Writing

Essay Writing

I earned my undergraduate degree at Harvard and my graduate degree at Oxford, and I have taught and coached writing for over ten years, including work on the Common Application, personal statement, and school-specific supplements.
Greek

Greek

I have learned Greek for the past 6 years and taught Ancient Greek -- spoken and traditional -- at Harvard and Oxford for the past 3.
Latin

Latin

I have significant experience training students to success at the NLE, GSCE, AP Latin, SAT Latin Component, and Latin A-Level exams. I myself received 3 gold medals on my NLE exams in high school, a 5 on AP Latin, and a 740 on the SAT Latin Component. Moreover, I have had significant experience both teaching and learning Ancient Greek at both Harvard and Oxford, so if you are looking for a sense of what learning the Ancient Languages is like in that context, I'd be happy to help prepare you.
SAT Reading

SAT Reading

I've taught close reading in the humanities at Harvard and Oxford for over ten years, which is exactly what SAT Reading tests. I show students how to read quickly under time pressure, avoid the common trap answers, and back every choice with specific lines from the passage. We drill the question types until they feel automatic, so scores climb steadily instead of bouncing around.

An *amazing* tutor

Cole is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable! It's difficult not to (a) learn a lot from him and (b) have fun while doing it :) I greatly look forward to working with him more this summer!

Very sharp SAT Writing tutor

I was super lost on SAT writing and Cole helped me so much! He identified what was causing all of my punctuation mistakes and provided me with an unique way for spotting those as opposed to simply guessing. You can tell he really knows the test inside out. Clearest explainer I've had.
