Bio

I teach math in an independent school in NYC, and have also worked in math ed-tech. Prior to that, I was a college professor at the University of Rochester. I love explaining things clearly and seeing understanding blossom in a student.

To help a student understand something, the key is to make it concrete, relatable, and intuitive. If the explanation sounds clever, then it's no good.

To help a student understand something, the key is to make it concrete, relatable, and intuitive. If the explanation sounds clever, then it's no good.

My undergraduate degree was in mathematics and philosophy at Oxford University. I use machine learning (linear algebra, calculus, probability, and statistics) in my research.

Let's do an initial chat for free, and if you like how it goes, then let's take it from there.

By the way, I seem to receive a lot of requests for Prolog tutoring. I guess somehow my profile shows up when people search for that? Although I did learn a little bit of Prolog many years ago, I don't know it nearly well enough to be able to tutor anyone in it. So, I regret that I have to turn down any requests for Prolog tutoring. Sorry about that.

ACT Math

ACT Math

I have 20+ years in math and scientific programming. Via my school-age son, I have recently gained a lot of experience in some wonderful interactive math-teaching software and websites, such as Desmos, Geogebra and Mathigon. I don't think that schools have started using these much yet, but they have great potential for helping a tutor to make math more tangible, interactive and engaging.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2

I have an undergrad degree in math, and I use math every day for data analysis in my scientific research.
AMC (Competition math)

AMC (Competition math)

Undergrad degree in mathematics and philosophy from Oxford. Ph.D. in computational neuroscience. Teach math at a gifted & talented school in NYC. Have worked with students on various math competitions, including AMC8, AMC10, Mathcounts, MOEMS, Noetics and Purple Comet.
College Counseling

College Counseling

I have taught at the university and high school levels, so I have an unusually broad perspective on how the two different types of education relate to each other. High school students often do not quite appreciate the extent to which college courses require much more self-directed discovery and exploration of resources, as opposed to simply working from a provided textbook. Being able to convey this sort of self-guided independent thinking would significantly enhance many students' college applications.
Computer Programming

Computer Programming

I have a lot of experience in Matlab, and am in the process of transitioning to Python (using NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, and so on). I really like Matlab a lot, and it pains me to see that it is gradually becoming obsolete, but that's how things are going. If you are starting to learn a programming language now, then I highly recommend that you learn Python instead of Matlab, simply because Python is becoming much more widely used. For some reason, my profile shows up when people search on Wyzant for Prolog. Although I did learn a bit of Prolog many years ago, I regret that I don't know enough to be able to tutor anyone in that.
Data Science

Data Science

I use Matlab and Python (NumPy, Scikit-learn) to carry out computational and statistical analyses of human brain data (fMRI). I have also written tutorials in both languages on fMRI analysis, statistics and neural networks.
Elementary Math

Elementary Math

I have 20+ years in math and scientific programming. Via my school-age son, I have recently gained a lot of experience in some wonderful interactive math-teaching software and websites, such as Desmos, Geogebra and Mathigon. GRE

GRE

My GRE scores: 169/170 on Verbal, 170/170 on Quantitative, 5.5/6 on Analytical Writing.
Logic

Logic

A major focus of my degree in Math & Philosophy from Oxford was their intersection, namely mathematical logic. This included propositional calculus, predicate calculus and its axiomatisations, modal logic and set theory. I also studied automated logical theorem proving using PROLOG.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I use Matlab to carry out computational and statistical analyses of human brain data (fMRI). I have also written tutorials in Matlab on fMRI analysis, statistics and neural networks.
Neuroscience

Neuroscience

Ph.D. in computational neuroscience, applied to neural network models of visual cortex. Subsequent research in applying machine learning to decoding human fMRI data.

Regents

Regents

I have successfully taught students in Regents Algebra 1, Algebra 2 and Regents Geometry.
SAT Math

SAT Math

SAT math questions try to come at you from a slightly different angle than you might be used to. The key is to see through the unfamiliar-seeming surface to get to the familiar math underneath.
SHSAT (NY HS admissions)

SHSAT (NY HS admissions)

Have worked with students on both parts of the SHSAT: the math and also the English section. Many students from the middle school where I teach have gone on to Stuyvesant, Bronx Science, Brooklyn Tech, HSMSE and other SHSAT schools.
Statistics

Statistics

I use statistics every day as part of my cognitive neuroscience research, including basic statistics (correlation, regression, t-tests, ANOVA, etc.) and also more complex multivariate stats (General Linear Model, principal components analysis (PCA), discriminant analysis, Gaussian Naive Bayes, various other classifier algorithms).
