Bio

Hi there! I have been teaching for 10 years at the same Bronx middle school where I have taught 6th grade through Algebra 1. I love teaching math because problem solving is like putting together a puzzle and I hope to bring the joy that comes along with this process to my students. I cannot say I have a favorite topic to teach because there can be so much creativity and fun involved across grade levels and content.

I love tutoring because it is a chance to connect with a student one on one and really understand what and how they think. Tutoring provides solid individualized attention from a two-way relationship that is impossible to to recreate in a classroom of 27 or more students. Tutoring provides the ability to quickly determine students' strengths and weaknesses in order to build upon their strengths and address their weaknesses so that they can gain confidence and foster independence.

I am an outstanding math tutor because I put you and your needs first. I want to see you become successful on your own by sharing tools that you can use outside of tutoring sessions. Not only do I have years of experience teaching math and familiarity with the content and many different curricula, I also score our middle school math state exams so I am keenly aware of what the state is looking for in terms of success criteria. Scoring the exams has given me better ideas of common misconceptions students often have and enables me to address these misconceptions by providing multiple approaches to problem solving.

Thank you for taking the time to read through my profile. I cannot wait to do math with you :)

Algebra 1

Algebra 1

I teach Algebra 1 as a before/after school program at my school.
Algebra 2

Algebra 2

After reviewing the progression of math standards for my own certification and professional exams, I know firsthand what it is like to learn or relearn higher level mathematics. I have been tutoring Algebra 2 outside of my regular work hours since the beginning of 2024. My focus is on building conceptual understanding by recalling and applying new ideas to prior background knowledge from Algebra 1. I look forward to helping you succeed in Algebra 2 and beyond!
Common Core

Common Core

I earned my master's degree in Secondary Math Education from St. John's University in 2017 and have been teaching 6th grade-Algebra 1 since 2015. I have experience and familiarity with a broad range of curricula that are aligned to the Common Core and now Next Generation Standards. I focus on deepening students' conceptual understanding and reading comprehension skills so that students can tackle any problem they come across.
Prealgebra

Prealgebra

I have been teaching and tutoring prealgebra and algebra over the last 10 years since becoming a licensed teacher in New York State. I am very familiar with requirements for success for all standardized tests. Prior to teaching, I was a substitute teacher and math curriculum researcher. As a student I tutored my peers and younger students throughout my academic career.
Regents

Regents

I have been teaching the Algebra 1 Regents course to my 8th graders for the last 4 years and my students' results outperform the rest of my school by 3 times the passing rate. I have scored the June Regents exams for two years which has given me additional insight into the test and how students answer constructed response questions. My keen insight into the scoring method helps me plan and prepare students to accrue the most points possible.
Spanish

Spanish

After studying Spanish throughout High School and college, I earned a Bachelor's of Arts in Spanish Literature, Language, and Culture from the University of Maryland. Since becoming a Math teacher in NYC, I have worked with many Spanish speaking students and often communicate with them and their families in Spanish. I decided to go back to school to complete coursework in order to earn a Bilingual Extension from CUNY Lehman College in 2021.

Wonderful and effective Tutor

We used Rachel to tutor our 11 year-old son in sixth grade math. She’s an actual sixth grade math teacher, so we were really happy to find her. She was super helpful, really brought our son along in his math knowledge and skill, and knew the curriculum really well. Very very pleasant and easy to work with
