Looking for help in writing a scientific or academic research paper for class or publication? I currently pursuing an MD/PhD in microbiome, cancer, and immunology. I started tutoring writing at a writing center 10 years ago at the Illinois Math and Science Academy and then brought my passion for teaching and biology to Emory University, where I helped students master biology concepts as a teaching assistant in the foundational biology course and navigate their research projects as a biology research course fellow. I have published in two major scientific journals, including Nature Cell Biology, and received the prestigious F30 national research grant. I've also presented at two national conferences including the Annual American Association of Cancer Research Conference. I received the highest honors in biology at Emory University and I am currently an MD/Ph.D. student studying immunology, microbiome, and cancer. For my academic and biology achievements, I have been honored to receive numerous awards including the Phi Beta Kappa (The oldest and prestigious academic honor society in the United States), Darrell Stokes Award (awarded to only one graduating senior for exemplary academics, creativity, and leadership in the college and biology department), and Barry Goldwater Scholarship Honorable Mention (recognized for academic achievement, exceptional scientific research, and demonstrated potential and commitment to making significant contributions as a scientist). I help students with scientific writing and academic research papers, from finding primary literature review to essay editing. I provide both offline and live editing sessions as well. I have worked with many clients to successfully publish their papers in academic journals, win science competitions, or complete research essays for their coursework. Please reach out if you have any questions! I very much look forward to sharing the exciting world of biology with you!
Career Development

Career Development

I am an MD/Ph.D. candidate with extensive tutoring and writing background. My passion is to mentor students through their journey to successfully conquer the admission process for competitive college, medical (MD and MD/PhD), and graduate school. It is a difficult, often anxiety-inducing journey; but with a mentor, many students' lives are transformed when they are able to navigate this experience with someone who has been through it. I utilize my own successful experience as an applicant, and now as a member of the MD/Ph.D. admissions committee where I interview and vote on applicants, to effectively launch students into the next stage of their academic and professional journey. My goal is to provide mentorship and guidance to help you reach your goal at whatever stage you are in your journey. For admissions, my goal is to transform your story and accomplishments into an essay and application that will make you stand out. I've helped many students with their applications by conveying their hard work and outstanding qualities to make the best possible first-impression through essays, resumes, and cover letters. I also coach students in preparation for interviews - I enjoy building interviewing and speaking skills with students so that they can walk into their real interviews both confident and prepared. I am excited to share my decades of experience with you and work together to achieve your goals!

I utilize my own successful experience as an applicant, and now as a member on the MD/Ph.D. admissions committee where I interview and vote on applicants, to effectively launch students into the next stage of their academic and professional journey. I find it so rewarding to help students approach their goals through both short and long term planning. I've worked with high school students since their first day of freshman year to build a long-term approach to college and medical school - helping plan their coursework, extracurriculars, research involvement, and standardized test. I've also worked with college students since their first year in college and have maintained long-term mentoring relationships. Now, I am helping them apply to MD and MD/PhD programs. Whatever stage you are in your journey, I want to help you along the way and when you are ready to apply, to help you convey your hard work and outstanding qualities into a coherent, memorable application. Efficient and Patient Tutor for REU Applications

Joan has helped me tremendously with my summer REU applications, from brainstorming essay ideas to telling my stories effectively. She was efficient, professional, and patient during every session. These were super competitive research programs, and the application process was anxiety-inducing. I am very lucky to have met Joan, who, as a physician-scientist herself, has extensive experience in scientific research and knows what it is like to be a pre-med student. Without Joan, I wouldn’t have been able to get into the summer program that I want to attend.

Grade-saving tutor

I came to Joan with a question so confusing I couldn't wrap my head around it. Not only did she make sense of it, but she provided me with all the key details I would need to include in my paper. Hand on heart, I can say Joan saved me from repeating my final year of university. She went above and beyond, providing me with research articles pertaining to the research question. Its a shame I discovered Joan at the end of my university life, I wish I had known about her sooner! Thank you Joan!

Great tutor!

I began using Joan a few weeks ago for graduate work in biological science. She is pleasant and knowledgable. Joan is great at helping me understand the coursework. She is always willing to go over difficult material and give practical clear examples. Every session Joan is prepared to help me build on previous course work. She always follows up with notes from our session so I can review them. Joan is flexible with times to meet and, always accommodates my schedule. I would recommend her highly and, I always look forward to working with her.
