In 1999, I moved abroad to a country that does not have restaurant access to many of my favorite foods, the dishes that I knew and loved. So to resolve my cravings, I had to learn how to prepare my favorites for myself. Fast forward to 2002, I owned and managed an International Backpacker Hostel for 17 years, and received thousands of visitors from all over the world. Since the hostel had a communal kitchen, many of my guests would cook their favorite home-style recipes from their country of origin. So I also learned how to make many dishes by watching and learning from them.

I speak fluent Spanish at a C1 level. While I'm not a native speaker, I still have something to offer, because I can explain things from the perspective of someone who learned as an adult, (not someone who grew up speaking both languages). I began learning Spanish in 1997, doing the typical one-on-one Berlitz courses. Eventually, I went to Venezuela and studied there. With that Spanish, I was able to continue practicing until I was accepted to the Peace Corps in 1999, where I was assigned to be a small business volunteer. Well, many years later, I still live in Panama, and now. I'm a very patient teacher who can make learning and practice fun!

When I was a youngster, I won the district-wide oral reading contest twice (5th and 6th grade). That was when I caught the acting bug. In junior high and high school I was in all the school plays, often in the lead role. I went to acting classes in NYC on the weekends at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre, (some famous alumni include: Tony Randall, Kim Basinger, Diane Keaton, Steve McQueen). After high school I went to New York University's Tisch School of the Arts as a drama major for one year. Alas, at that point I decided to not pursue a professional career in acting, but I have informally kept up with all things Theatre and Arts.

Excellent College Application Essay Support!

My daughter writes well and had been working on her essays for college. She wanted me to edit for errors but I feared I would read it and make it sound more like an adult and not her. Andrea was very easy to reach, has a great laid back approach ( not stressful to student) and very efficient with the turn around time. My daughter sent her first essay which was really good ! I was so pleased that Andrea first asked about my daughter’s sensitivity level to corrections as her essay was deeply personal. I loved that Andrea edited and made a few corrections/ suggestions but left the personality and authenticity intact. My daughter liked her when they met on Wyzant ( not required- I just wanted her to meet my daughter to know who she was as a person) We decided it was more efficient for her to email Andrea her completed essays and the turn around time is amazing! She responds very quickly on Wyzant and charges only for time spent on each essay or letter without overcharging. This affordability will allow us to send as many as needed.
