About Lauren

Bio

I'm currently a Lecturer in the Discipline of Biomedical Engineering (BME) at Columbia University, where I teach senior engineering design and laboratory courses that span the biomedical engineering curriculum.

I'm a three-time Duke BME graduate (Ph.D. 2022, M.S. 2017, B.S.E. 2016). As a graduate student, I served as a teaching assistant (TA) for four different BME courses: BME 271A: Signals & Systems, BME 303L: Modern Diagnostic Imaging Systems, BME 590: Magnetic Resonance Imaging -...

2016). As a graduate student, I served as a teaching assistant (TA) for four different BME courses: BME 271A: Signals & Systems, BME 303L: Modern Diagnostic Imaging Systems, BME 590: Magnetic Resonance Imaging - Principles & Sequence Design, and BME 790L: Signal Processing & Applied Mathematics. I have also tutored more than two dozen Duke student athletes in topics ranging from introductory coding (in MATLAB) to Medical Instrumentation to Music Theory! Working with such a wide range of students in different disciplines has given me a unique viewpoint on what it takes to be a successful educator, and I hope we get the chance to work together!

Additionally, I am practically fluent in MATLAB (10+ years of experience). I use it almost every day. I have previously tutored dozens of students across all ages and levels in MATLAB, and I enjoy helping students learn how to "think like a computer" to turn pseudocode into instructions a computer can execute.

Math has always been one of my favorite subjects. I love how there are explicit rules that will undoubtedly lead you toward the solution to any problem. I have taken multiple calculus courses in high school and college, including single variable and multivariable calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations, and I continue to use these skills in my current academic ventures.

Furthermore, since biomedical engineering is an amalgamation of electrical and mechanical engineering, I have taken a plethora of courses in these disciplines during my time as an undergraduate and a graduate student at Duke.

Please reach out if you have any questions, comments or concerns! I look forward to helping you reach your goals, and to hopefully have fun learning along the way!

Approved Subjects

Guitar

Guitar

I have played the guitar for over 18 years, taking weekly lessons starting in second grade until graduating high school. I have been formally trained in music theory, guitar tablature, ear training, and composition. I have written multiple songs that have been registered with the US Copyright Office.
MATLAB

MATLAB

I have loved MATLAB since I first learned it during my freshman year of undergrad. Over the past decade, I've written countless MATLAB codes for my classes and research. I have previously tutored numerous undergraduate students in the introductory MATLAB course at Duke, and I've worked with dozens of undergraduate and graduate students in their MATLAB-related coursework.
Proofreading

Proofreading

I've published over 10+ papers in high-impact, peer-reviewed journals. I have extensive experience writing, revising, and reviewing scientific journal articles.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have presented my research at numerous national and local conferences. I have extensive experience preparing for and delivering oral presentations to scientific and non-scientific audiences with different presentation styles. I also have lectured groups of up to 80 college students in a classroom setting, which requires the often overlooked ability to respond to questions and then seamlessly transition back into the lesson.
Songwriting

Songwriting

I have been writing music for over a decade. In that time, I have written my own lyrics and music for a variety of instruments including: guitar, piano, bass guitar, violin, viola, drums, and tambourine. I also create sheet music for my compositions using GuitarPro. I have successfully obtained registered copyrights for multiple songs.

Great session, highly recomend

Lauren was professional and knowledgeable in her field. We worked out an issue that had been trumping me for a week, and in one short session, she was able to get me to where I needed to go.

great teacher

She’s helped me and solved the problem I advise anyone to teaching him. She has a good knowledge about biomechanics and diagnosis instrumentation Thanks Lauren

Understanding, Patient, knows her stuff!

Laurens was able to very quickly understand what I needed and helped me understand better as well! She took unfamiliar homework assignments in a very niche and high level class and was able to teach me through the steps! She is a Matlab genius.
