Bio

As a Harvard Ph.D. with a B.S. from the College of William and Mary (Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude), I know exactly how to help students with their STEM courses and standardized test preparation. I have a track record of successfully helping students with their courses and standardized exams. I most commonly help students prepare for all sections of their ACT, SAT (including the new digital SAT) and ISEE/SSAT exams, as well as with STEM courses such as AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry,...

As a Harvard Ph.D. with a B.S. from the College of William and Mary (Phi Beta Kappa, Summa Cum Laude), I know exactly how to help students with their STEM courses and standardized test preparation. I have a track record of successfully helping students with their courses and standardized exams. I most commonly help students prepare for all sections of their ACT, SAT (including the new digital SAT) and ISEE/SSAT exams, as well as with STEM courses such as AP Biology, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, data science, machine learning, AI and Python.

One distinct advantage that I have over other tutors is that my knowledge is more than just theoretical. I have taught introductory and upper-level biology courses and served as the leader of the world-class 2017 William & Mary iGEM team (#2 in the world). I have won awards for mathematical and computational modeling and biology and have published several scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals. Further, because my acceptance into a Harvard Ph.D. program required success on many different high-stakes standardized tests, I know exactly how and what students need to study to succeed.

Many students run into real trouble on their standardized tests because they’ve falsely been led to believe that the standardized tests assess their knowledge of complicated concepts. In truth, standardized tests assess relatively simple ideas presented in a convoluted manner. I help students get into the mind of the test maker and see what test questions are really asking. This enables them to answer more quickly and correctly, improving their score. In general, students who prepare with me for around a month see improvements of about 15 percentile points, equivalent to approximately 4-5 points on the ACT and 150 points on the SAT.

I respond to inquiries quickly and have plenty of time available to tutor students. Please feel free to contact me if you want to set up a lesson or if you want to set up a video or phone meeting to discuss if I would be a good fit for your student.

ACT English

ACT English

As an expert ACT tutor and Harvard Ph.D., I have helped students from all backgrounds significantly improve their scores. Most students see average improvements to their ACT English section of 2-3 points within 8 weeks. As a tutor, my style is highly test focused, as students often struggle due to how the test asks questions rather than their lack of knowledge or ability. To that end, my test preparation course strongly emphasizes teaching students general and question-specific test-taking strategies and how to identify and exploit the test's design. In my tutoring sessions, I work with students to understand how to solve any individual question and identify what knowledge they need for problems of any given type. Depending on the student's needs, I also provide support with any missing concepts, timing, and psychological issues (e.g., test anxiety). I typically expect students to do about 3 hours of work a week outside of our sessions. The ACT is too important to leave to chance, so don't hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions or if you're interested in working with me.

ADHD

ADHD

Learning and succeeding with ADHD is not always easy. I provide tutoring and life-coaching help for teens and young adults who have ADHD. Students with ADHD need specialized structure in their lives (accountability, immediate short term rewards), as well as systems put in place (by themselves and/or parents) to enable their success. I have strong working knowledge of the types of actions and systems that students can use to try to better organize themselves for success. There is no magic bullet solution and every student is unique, so I try to place a high value on experimentation and providing students resources to figure out what works best for them.
Algebra 1

Algebra 1

Even though algebra 1 is the foundation of most upper-level mathematics, many students need better-quality teaching. Middle and high school students are forced to memorize arcane formulas to pass tests. College students are often taught abstractly and confusingly. My goal is to cut through all of that and help my students learn algebra in an uncomplicated way that still provides a deep understanding. As a Harvard Ph.D. who regularly uses math to solve biological problems and holds a bachelor's in applied math, I can help students go beyond just passing their class, imbuing them with an understanding of why algebra is such an essential mathematical tool and setting them up for success in future courses, and standardized tests

Biology

Biology

Get help from a Harvard Systems Biology Ph.D. who is an expert in all things biology and synthetic biology. I am incredibly knowledgeable about undergraduate and graduate-level biology and have taught introductory and upper-level courses in biology. In 2019, I graduated Summa Cum Laude (3.94) with a degree in applied biology from William & Mary. Along the way, I took extensive coursework in molecular biology, chemistry, and mathematics. More importantly, I have performed and am the first author of original research published in peer-reviewed journals (Journal of Biological Engineering, PLOS One). Moreover, I have won multiple international prizes for my research as the student leader of William & Mary's Bioengineering Lab (iGEM Best Modeling, Best Measurement, Grand Prize Runner Up, Gold Medal X3, and more). During my Ph.D. at Harvard University I worked on synthetic biological approaches for sustainability, including renewable fuels, emerging health threats, and sustainable resource extraction. My work has been published in journals such as Nature Reviews Microbiology and ACS Synthetic Biology. There is no better person to help you with your biology. So feel free to reach out if you need help in honors biology, AP biology, genetics, microbiology, intro biology, molecular biology, evolutionary biology, or any other biology course.
Calculus

Calculus

In obtaining my B.S. in applied mathematics and biology, I took and (and earned an A in) Calculus I - III as well as in ordinary and partial differential equations. Additionally, several of my biology research projects have used calculus, and I have taken a significant number of additional classes which utilize calculus beyond the main calculus track.

Additionally, as a freshman, I performed research in an NSF-funded chemistry laboratory. Currently, I conduct research as a biologist and biochemist and work with and use chemistry every day. I am the perfect tutor for anyone struggling with chemistry and am especially valuable for students interested in biology or medicine. I have a broad knowledge base and strive to help my students go beyond rote memorization, giving them a more comprehensive and deeper understanding of chemistry.
College Counseling

College Counseling

Everyone knows how arcane and confusing the college admissions process is, but fewer know that this confusion is created on purpose. I'm highly knowledgeable and have worked with students who have ended up attending their dream schools such as Harvard, MIT, UW-Madison, NYU, and more. The admissions process is constantly changing (test-optional, new supplements, etc.), but I keep on top of the latest news and information to ensure you have the best chance at the right college.

Tutor to encourage the discouraged!

I have scheduled one session for my 16 year old godson that is historically a good test taker but could use points assistance for excellent scores. He had positive energy around the idea of learning question techniques from Ethan and he was impressed with his ability to quickly find the questions that he excels at vs his challenges areas. We just got the resources he suggested delivered yesterday and are looking forward to making progress over the next few weeks. My godson said it felt like he was learning from a really smart college student and that made him more comfortable. Thanks so much!

Highly recommend Ethan!

Our son needed to get up to speed in math in order to apply to a handful of private high schools. Working with Ethan he went from very bottom of the pack to a very good ISEE math score that is reflective of his capabilities. He enjoyed his sessions, learning new content, and is looking forward to a breezing through the rest of middle school math. Highly recommend Ethan to anyone looking for an excellent tutor that your child will enjoy working with!!
