I am a first-generation college graduate from Washington, DC. I studied philosophy and played lacrosse at Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA. Following acceptance into Morehouse College, I have gained quality assets by challenging my own tenacity, as I have mentored and taught many children, as well as acquired leadership and managerial experience in campus organizations and sports. I have been very intentional about centering my endeavors around my passions, while maintaining a socially entrepreneurial lens. To me, such work starts with someone deeply and highly motivated by inspiring and lifting others, through whatever avenue they choose. For me, classroom education is my medium.
It has been a rewarding and fulfilling journey these past three years teaching middle school math. I began my teaching career in Houston, TX, teaching math to sixth grade boys. I unlocked my students’ potential to achieve 88% passing on the STAAR State-Exams, a 26% increase from the previous year, which ranked 3rd out of 10 KIPP Houston Schools. Beyond the statistics, I grew tremendously serving my students of Northeast Houston; I’ve learned leadership, organization and prioritization, parent/community partnership and engagement, and moreover, compassion. The following year, I traveled back home to D.C. to teach 5th grade math. The experience to teach students in my hometown was an invaluable blessing, as we were able to achieve 58% growth on the state-exam.
In my freshman year at Morehouse College, I started the school’s first lacrosse club team and at the time, only the third HBCU lacrosse team. I saw the lack of sport that I fell in love with offered at Morehouse, not as a burden but an opportunity to create a sustainable and a cathartically and socially transformative program for my peers, my community, and myself.
