I'm Katie! I am a recent graduate of Barnard College where obtained my BA in History and Political Science, with a focus on early American history and US politics. Throughout my time at Barnard, I learned that no matter where you are or what school you attend, there will always be bad teachers––teachers that exclusively use YouTube videos as teaching tools, teachers that would rather fail a student than put in the time and effort to work with them and help them understand the content, teachers that really don't care about teaching. As someone who has had her fair share of bad teachers, I know firsthand how easy it is to start hating a subject when you have an ineffective instructor. A teacher who is passionate about a subject can be a game changer, which is why I want pass my love for English and public speaking on to current students.
I want to help students approach each subject with an open mind and overcome the barriers that may be holding them back. I love seeing students' self-confidence grow as they realize that they *can* master the content that they once found impossible. For me, tutoring is less about the increase in grades and the boost in self-esteem that accompanies that increase.
I have five years of experience in teaching public speaking, research, and debate as well as two years of experience in private debate tutoring. I have worked as a debate coach at a high school in Brooklyn where I work with students on conducting research, written and oral argumentation, persuasive writing, and public speaking.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or if you would like to schedule lessons! I'm more than happy to discuss my background or approach with you so that you can make sure that I am a good fit for you or your child.
