Bio

I'm Matt, a composer and saxophonist. I'm a graduate of Manhattan School of Music's jazz department, where I also studied classical composition and theory with Reiko Fueting and Peter Andriacchi. These two fields together made me realize that there are so many different ways to think about music theory! These two fields together made me realize that there are so many different ways to think about music theory! I love finding all the new ways that people think about theory- learning from my students is what makes teaching really gratifying.

Because I believe there are limitless different ways to teach music theory, I don't subscribe to any particular method. However if a student needs to learn a system for an assignment, I'm more than happy to apply knowledge I have to the situation to allow you to make the greatest progress possible. Systems I've studied include general tonal analysis of works from Bach to Schoenberg, Schenkerian analysis, dodecaphonic analysis, and analysis of serial works. For analysis of compositions don' fall into any of these categories, I have detailed knowledge of the compositional and theoretical processes of Debussy, Stravinsky, Messiaen, and a host of other 20th century composers.

In addition to collegiate pedagogy classes, I have 7 years teaching experience with saxophone students. I'm skilled at tailoring lessons and plans to the students individual needs and to adjusting approach as is necessary. I have a special focus on Ear Training pedagogy, though all music is my passion.

I'm happy and excited to share any knowledge I have with students! Please, don't hesitate to reach out and ask any questions you may have.

Ear Training,

Ear Training

I've been teaching ear training techniques as part of my saxophone pedagogy for 7 years now. I incorporate aspects of transcription and sight singing to build a cohesive 'inner ear' that students can draw on in myriad different ways to achieve their musical goals. At Manhattan School of Music, completed an Advanced Ear Training course, and studied Ear Training Pedagogy with Peter Andreacchi.
General Music,

General Music

I've been a professional musician my entire working life; my knowledge of music spans many genres, not limited to the specific study I have of Western classical and jazz. I've been teaching saxophone lessons for 7 years to a wide variety of students and through those lessons have developed teaching techniques for a wide variety of musical topics, including but not limited to acoustics, music theory, counterpoint, sight singing, transcription, voice leading, and harmonic analysis.
Music Theory,

Music Theory

I've used a practical working knowledge of music theory to my benefit for my entire musical life. As an improvising musician, a deep knowledge of theory is necessary, and as a composer an attitude of active exploration is essential. Through teaching saxophone lessons for 7 years, I've developed ways of teaching music theoretical concepts including harmony, counterpoint, voice leading, overtones/harmonics/fundamentals of sound, formal analysis, and much more.
Saxophone,

Saxophone

I have 14 years of saxophone playing experience, 7 years teaching experience. Have studied with Rich Perry, Dayna Stevens, Vincent Herring, and Dave Liebman. Love passing on saxophone knowledge!
Sight Singing

Sight Singing

Have been teaching sight singing to saxophone students for 4 years. I use both movable and fixed do systems, though tend to opt for movable do in most situations. Completed Advanced Ear Training curriculum at Manhattan School of Music (focused on Modus Novus) and an Ear Training Pedagogy course with Peter Andreacchi. Studied ear training privately with Caris Liebman.

Great teacher!

I received a lot of help with sight singing in just a few months before a competition and my skills improved significantly! I barely had any prior knowledge but he taught me a lot about notes, rhythms, tempos, dynamics, and key signatures. He was very patient and explained things very clearly, and created many examples I could practice with! He gave me a lot of tips on sight reading and singing, and taught at a good pace!
