My name is Ryan and for ten years I served as a history teacher and then chairperson of a history department at a high school in New York City. Currently, I serve as the Assistant Principal of another New York City high school. I taught AP US History for many years and over time increased my school's passing rate to over 90%. My name is Ryan and for ten years I served as a history teacher and then chairperson of a history department at a high school in New York City. Currently, I serve as the Assistant Principal of another New York City high school. I taught AP US History for many years and over time increased my school's passing rate to over 90%. When I started the scores were well below 50%. I was trained to teach AP history in the summer of 2015 and have spent a significant amount of time since that time studying the (constantly changing) AP rubrics and honing my craft. I've done quite a bit of tutoring - both online and in person - and have a good rapport with students, many of whom I continue to be in touch with. I am extremely proud to say that over seven years of tutoring, almost 100% of my tutoring students have passed the AP exam.

I love teaching and am eager to help other students learn to master the content, skills, and strategies needed to conquer the AP History test. I have a lot of resources to help students with the different events, peoples, trends, and connections of the curriculum and also strategies to perfect the writing (DBQ, LEQ, SAQ) and multiple choice portions of the AP test. I have experience teaching a diverse group of students and am willing and able to work with anyone, no matter where they are in their preparation for the test.

I pride myself in my writing and I have been teaching with students on their writing for over a decade. I have specific strategies that will help with each type of writing activity on the AP test as well as practices to help writing as a whole.

I'm willing and able to bend my schedule to meet your needs. And, I am eager to help as much or as little as you'd like. I can lecture on content or provide sample multiple-choice and essay questions as well as give specific feedback on your (or your child's) work.

American History

American History

I have taught history, primarily AP US History, for over a decade and am a certified teacher and school building leader. I also hold a certification from the College Board for AP US History. Over my years of teaching and tutoring, I’ve worked with students from all backgrounds and skill levels, helping them achieve success no matter where they start. I believe in building trust, delivering engaging content, modeling critical thinking, and then practicing until mastery is achieved. It’s been a privilege to work with students across the country, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with you or your student as well
Social Studies

Social Studies

I have taught multiple social studies classes for six years, including teaching World History for four. I have written curricula and assessments for World History, Economics, and US Government for our network of 30+ schools. I also over see a team of 4 other history teachers.
Writing

Writing

As a history teacher, I spent a lot of time teaching writing. I know how to simplify the process and have methods to teach students how to write thesis statements, support their arguments with evidence, and write coherent, logic-based essays.

Excellent, motivating teacher.

Ryan helped my child with a History paper. He is very intelligent, easy going, an excellent communicator and a very good teacher. Friendly, warm and he clearly likes teaching. He knows the material. I would highly recommend Ryan as a tutor.

Highly Recommended Tutor

I would highly recommend Mr. S. to any student who is planning to take a U.S. History course. My child has gone through many essays and AP review questions with Mr. S. which have greatly benefited her in writing future LEQs and DBQs.

AP US History

My 11th grade son had an instant connection with Ryan. He tutored my son in AP US History. He explained the concepts very clearly to my son and was highly supportive. Ryan wanted to speak beforehand so he could approach the session with insight into the difficulties my son was having. I highly recommend Ryan for AP US History...he is an excellent and highly caring tutor.

Passionate and Intelligent

Ryan is very well versed in US History, and is able to dive right into the material and answer questions. My teenager was not really interested in studying history, and was skeptical at first if a tutor would be helpful, but he was able to get my student interested in the content and keep her engaged through out the session. I highly recommend him
