Bio

I have lived most of my life in Athens, Greece. I started learning Ancient Greek and Latin when I was very young. Ancient Greek and Latin are two very important subjects in European schools. I loved language so much that I specialized in Linguistics as part of my university degree. My Bachelor's is specifically in Linguistics and Greek philosophy. In Greece, I was a private tutor and private school teacher for 12 years until moving to the USA. I've taught all ages and abilities, from young kids to doctorate-level adults. I particularly enjoy teaching through fun activities - especially art projects! On top of fun projects, I particularly love any chance to nerd-out on the deep nuances and technicalities of languages. I focus on teaching 3 languages: Latin, Ancient Greek, and Modern Greek. I find the connection of these 3 languages to be very exciting and fascinating, as they are the roots of many languages spoken today and contain so much cultural and historical depth. I have studied in depth Aristotle, Plato, Sophocles. I love Homer and I have studied the Iliad and the Odyssey in 4 different languages! Ancient Greek, a dialect called Katharevoosa, modern Greek and English. I have translated Sapho the ancient poet from Lesbos island and I have collaborated with many famous translators and artist on the nuances of language.

Culture and history are unique features that I bring to my lessons. I am Athenian and live the languages that I teach. I grew up seeing the Parthenon and the sea on a daily basis, plus I received top Greek education which is full of ancient philosophy and history. I bring the authenticity of the languages into my curriculum and projects, which is a valuable and exciting component to learning languages and being exposed to the culture. I understand deeply the Linguistic Historical evolution from the artificially constructed Erasmic pronunciation of ancient Greek to the Hellenistic Era and Alexander the Great, trough the Byzantine Empire the Koine language and the nowadays spoken Greek.

I am a native Greek speaker. At University I studied Greek Literature and Education with a specialization in Linguistics. I also work as a translator (children books, poetry, etc) usually translating from English to Greek. In Greece, I was a teacher and private tutor for 12 years, so I have a significant amount of experience teaching all ages (young children - adults). My approach to teaching is using fun activities and art while learning. Fun has a positive effect on motivation levels, determining what we learn and how much we retain. If the experience is fun, learners will stay curious and keep coming back for more. My goal is to convert the learning process into a fun project.

Special Needs

ADHD

ADHD

I got my Master's degree in Special Education from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, in Greece. I am highly qualified to teach students with ADHD as well as forms of Dyslexia and Dysorthography. I have worked for more than 15 years in a classroom and a private tutoring setting and my experience makes me a unique teacher. I researched aspects of ADHD with the University of Athens and I experimented on finding efficient as well as fun ways of tackling Dyslexia and forms of ADHD. The experiment took place in a school in the suburbs of Athens and I created a linguistic workshop introducing ancient Greek to elementary school kids and the other workshop I created was an Art & Craft one. The experiment held for a school year and the results on the kids were astonishing. The linguistic workshop taught the kids the ancient Greek as well as Indo-European (Latin) roots, thus the phenomenon of Dysorthography ( spelling issues) was minimized. On the other hand, the art introduction on a regular basis showed significant deterioration of anxiety and stress in a classroom setting, boosting of confidence and creativity, respect and collaboration between the students, and raising of empathy and cognitive skills. Kids felt "safer" in the class with their peers, the element of judgment was almost eliminated as a result of helping students with ADHD to be a part of a classroom.
