**EXPERIENCED WITH IN-PERSON AND DISTANCE LEARNING AND VERY FLEXIBLE ONLINE AVAILABILITY TO STUDENTS SEEKING TUTORING FROM HOME.**

My tutoring approach is modeled on the methods of my best teachers. Preparation, practice, and effort are key to achieving results. My priority is to ensure my students are given the necessary tools to excel in their subject matter. Whether it is building a basic foundation of Spanish or English vocabulary and grammar, preparing students for Spanish Advanced Placement testing, or guiding professionals in MS Word, Illustrator, or InDesign, I will ensure our shared goals are clearly identified, factored into our lesson plans, and considered in all evaluations.

I recently finished teaching at a private high school in New York City. I have also taught audio/visual translation as an adjunct professor at Montclair State University, have taught and tutor ESL, and have lived in several Spanish-speaking countries. I also have children who have studied Spanish over several years in our local school district, and am familiar with how extra tutoring in Spanish reading, writing, and oral proficiency can be of tremendous value as students advance, and when the time comes for AP testing.

Since every student is different with his/her unique learning style, I welcome any input and feedback from students and parents. I am always available to discuss questions, remain easily accessible, and will work diligently to help students and parents achieve their goals.

Whether you are a student interested in improving your Spanish or English language skills, Microsoft 365 proficiency (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), or a parent hoping to help your child improve Spanish or English reading, writing, and oral proficiency, your success is my mission. Please do not hesitate to get in touch. And, if you are considering a career in translation or language services, I can help you develop the skills employers look for when considering new hires or contracting freelance work.

ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have studied multiple languages throughout my life, including English, Latin, Hebrew, Spanish, Japanese, and limited French and Italian. I grew up in a bilingual English-Italian household, and my mother was an English professor and ESL teacher. I have had extensive exposure to foreign language speakers throughout my life, and am patient with the learning process (I understand what it feels like to be a learner of a new language). I taught ESL to Japanese businessmen working on the first iterations of GPS at Navtech back in the late 80's. I also taught ESL to Spanish speakers in Spain while obtaining my Master's degree in Spanish at Middlebury College. As an adjunct professor at MSU, I am comfortable in a teaching environment. In fact, many of my students speak Spanish as a first language, and English second, so teaching complex subject matter requires patience and consideration of their different learning styles and challenges.
Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

I have worked in Microsoft Word for most of my professional life. As a project manager working for international communications companies, I was responsible for learning the application, inside and out, in order to efficiently manage translation projects. Over the years, as the application has evolved, I have stayed abreast of updates and changes to functionality. As an adjunct professor at MSU, in addition to teaching audiovisual translation and project management, I have to teach my students the basics of MS Word in order for them to complete their assignments.
Spanish

Spanish

All of my life, I have been surrounded by Spanish-speakers. I grew up in California, where many people speak Spanish, and I lived in Spain, both as an undergraduate and graduate student. When I finished graduate school, I lived and worked in Puerto Rico and New Mexico, where I was required to conduct interviews and lead research using my Spanish language skills. I have studied Spanish extensively, starting in high school, continuing for a BA in Spanish at Santa Clara University, and then a Master's in Spanish language and grammar at Middlebury College. I read, write, and speak Spanish on a daily basis for work, as well as communicate with many peers and colleagues in Spanish. In many ways, because I grew up speaking English first, then learning Spanish language and grammar second, I have an exceptionally strong command of grammar rules. I spend a good amount of time editing and proofreading Spanish translation for my business. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and experience in Spanish language and culture, and welcome the opportunity to help new students of Spanish gain a better understanding and level of confidence navigating the language.

Extremely Patient and Thorough at Teaching

I've been working with Jay for almost a year now, and I can say that his teaching has been invaluable to me when learning Spanish. As someone with dyslexia, I've always struggled with language, but Jay has made learning Spanish in college a breeze. He was not only willing to prepare and bring his own materials on specific topics when needed but also excellent at adapting to my assignments, readings, studying, and speaking for the class. When I encountered challenging concepts, Jay would slow down, dedicating however much time was necessary for me to fully grasp and understand them. His patience and understanding were evident in every session, and he was always committed to ensuring my success, with the goal of achieving an A on every test and not simply going for “good enough”. In conclusion, Jay's dedication, adaptability, and unwavering support have been instrumental in my Spanish learning journey. I highly recommend him to anyone seeking a tutor who is thorough, patient, and willing to push them to succeed.

Knowledgeable, patient, organized, outstanding Spanish tutor

I can't say enough good things about our experience with Jason (Jay) as my son's Spanish tutor. Over the past several years, Jay has been an invaluable part of my son's journey in learning Spanish. Jay is patient, organized, a great communicator and teacher. What really sets Jay apart is his commitment to organization and preparedness. Every week, he would come up with a detailed study plan, ensuring that my son was better-prepared for quizzes, tests, and upcoming assignments. This made a significant difference in my son's confidence and performance in his Spanish classes. Jay also meticulously kept us informed of my son's progress, plans for the upcoming weeks, and areas of improvement, which allowed us to work together as a team to support him. Overall, I am very grateful for the positive impact Jay has had on my son learning Spanish. He is an outstanding tutor who goes above and beyond to support his students.
