ACT English

ACT English

I have been trained to tutor students preparing for the ACT in New York. I have also volunteered with several non-profit organizations around New York tutoring low-income New York City high school students. The ACT English evaluates students skills in English and requires mastery of both grammar rules and rhetorical skills. The section has 75 questions, a time limit of 45 minutes and roughly 36 seconds per question. There isn't a lot of time in the sections, so effective time management is key. My goal is to ensure that students learn test-taking strategies and develop effective study habits. I also have a database of practice tests and materials to compliment all tutoring sessions. I believe that with hard work, students can excel on the test.

I have also volunteered with several non-profit organizations around New York tutoring low-income New York City high school students. The ACT Reading evaluates students reading comprehension skills. Excelling on the ACT Reading requires a fair amount of practice and an understanding of the format and timing of the test. The section has 40 questions, a time limit of 35 minutes and roughly 52 seconds per question. There isn't a lot of time in the sections, so effective time management is key. My goal is to ensure that students learn test-taking strategies and develop effective study habits. I focus on actionable strategies that maximize chances of a great score. I also have a database of practice tests and materials to compliment all tutoring sessions. I believe that with hard work, students can excel on the test.
ACT Science

ACT Science

I have been trained to tutor students preparing for the ACT in New York. I have also volunteered with several non-profit organizations around New York tutoring low-income New York City high school students. The ACT Science measures five skills that are needed in the natural sciences: evaluation, analysis, interpretation, reasoning, and problem-solving. The section has 40 questions, a time limit of 35 minutes and roughly 52 seconds per question. There isn't a lot of time in the sections, so effective time management is key. Interestingly, the ACT Science doesn't require prior knowledge of science. The test measures scientific skills more than science knowledge. My goal is to ensure that students learn test-taking strategies and develop effective study habits. I also have a database of practice tests and materials to compliment all tutoring sessions. I believe that with hard work, students can excel on the test.
English

English

I have experience teaching literature, writing and advanced writing to English student of all levels and abilities. While in college, I was hired to work at the university’s writing center where I specialized in literature, creative writing, University Writing, brainstorming, and application/personal statements. Working at the writing center made me understand the importance of being able to communicate effectively in writing. I believe that great written communication enhances success both in academic and professional pursuits. My overall success is due to the fact that I am very patient explaining English grammar and usage.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I have experience teaching English as a Second Language to non-native speakers around New York City. Whether introductory or advanced, I have taught grammar, reading, writing, building vocabulary and conversation (oral communication). I truly believe that practice makes perfect and success in learning any new language gradually comes with enough practice and patience. I love languages and as a polyglot, I am aware with the nuisances of trying to grasp a second language. I have worked with students of all ages and all levels and my lessons are tailored to meet individual learning needs of my students.

Awesome Teacher

This is our third session with Violet. My son has learned a lot in a short time. He was having a hard time putting his thoughts down and organize them on any writing assignment. His last writing assignment was done in an hour because Violet provided the right tools. My son loves the way she provides feedback too. He thinks she is very patient.

A wonderful and patient tutor

Violet is definitely a wonderful and patient tutor who truly goes above and beyond in order to make sure her students learn the material inside and out. My daughter is only a few lessons into her ELA prep and she’s already showing improvements and her confidence has increased. Violet takes a holistic approach to tutoring and adjusts her teaching methods so my daughter can understand the material at a reasonable pace. When she sees that a certain method isn’t necessarily working, she thinks of different approaches that work. Overall, she’s a great tutor who is helpful, encouraging and supportive and I would definitely recommend her to anyone.
