I’m Ben, a professional writer and classical philologist specializing in Hebrew (Modern and Biblical), Ancient Greek, Latin, English as a Second Language (ESL), and advanced academic writing. I work with a small number of students who are looking for serious, focused instruction in language, literature, and writing at a high level.

My teaching is centered on close reading, grammar, translation, and precise analytical writing. In languages, I work from introductory study through advanced textual engagement, including Biblical Hebrew narrative, Greek prose and poetry (Homer, Plato, tragedy), and Latin literature. In writing, I focus on argument structure, clarity of expression, and revision strategy at the college and graduate level.

My background is in literary publishing and editorial work. I’ve published in The Paris Review, Bookforum, and Artforum, and worked on the fiction selection process at The Paris Review. I was a writer-in-residence at Arabesque in Akko, Israel, and have worked as a freelance editor with the Deborah Harris Agency. My editorial work includes collaboration with authors whose books have appeared on the cover of The New York Times Book Review.

For ESL students, I offer structured, conversation-based sessions designed to build fluency while refining grammatical accuracy. For advanced learners, sessions become more discussion-driven and tailored to specific professional or academic needs.

I have taught and worked with students internationally, including in Israel, Palestine, and Morocco. This experience informs a flexible but rigorous approach that adapts to the student’s goals while maintaining high expectations for precision and progress.

I take on a limited number of students at any given time in order to keep instruction focused and individualized. If you’re looking for intensive, high-level tutoring in languages or writing, I’d be glad to work with you.

Bible Studies

Bible Studies

In college I studied Greek and Hebrew, the languages of the Bible, to the advanced level. I read the Hebrew Tanakh (Old Testament) and Greek Scriptures (New Testament) often and have led seminars teaching both. My research specialties with Biblical literature are The Book of Jonah and the Gospel of Mark. I also led a Bible Study group, and have participated in multiple.
English

English

I am a professional writer and have tutored in college-level writing for five years. I have worked with middle schoolers and high schoolers as well on book reports, research papers, and college entrance essays.
ESL/ESOL

ESL/ESOL

I currently teach English conversation to a Chinese college student, and am studying for a TEFL certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language). I've taught English abroad, and this fall I will begin teaching ESL classes at a high school in Manhattan.
Greek

Greek

I studied ancient languages and literature in college, and Classical Greek was one of my specialties. I completed a major Greek philology project, and led translation seminars on Sophocles. I completed every semester of Greek that my college offered, and have advanced knowledge of Greek vocabulary, grammar, and literature.
Hebrew

Hebrew

I studied ancient languages and literature in college, and Biblical Hebrew was my specialty. I completed a major Hebrew philology project, and led translation seminars on The Book of Jonah. I completed every semester of Hebrew that my college offered (as well as studied it at my term enrolled in University College London), and have advanced knowledge of Biblical Hebrew vocabulary, grammar, and literature.
Latin

Latin

I have taught classical languages for a decade to groups and private students. I use a blend of the traditional translation method and, though these are “dead” languages, a spoken method that makes vocabulary and grammar stick more effectively, as well as creating more dynamic, engaging lessons.
Reading

Reading

I'm a professional writer and studied languages in college. I know all the parts of language like the back of my hand and can help with anything from the basics of reading to advanced grammatical terminology.

Kind, Patient and Flexible

Ben is working with our international dancers and they are really enjoying the classes, especially the way he adjusts his methods for each individual student. Within our group are mixed levels and he adjusts accordingly. Great tutor!

My Hebrew Tutor Ben

When it became clear that we would all be "sheltering in place" for a long while, I took up a new hobby: Hebrew. I had no education or former experience with any Semitic language, so I was starting from scratch. Since then, I have been meeting with Ben for one hour a week, every Saturday morning. I greatly look forward to each lesson. Ben is a very effective teacher. He is patient yet deliberate with each lesson, looking for the most efficient way to communicate difficult concepts. Ben is also personable and kind. We enjoy catching up after the lesson is finished. I am very satisfied with my progress under Ben's guidance. After one year, I can read large portions of the Biblical text, along with being able to write and speak a decent amount. The language becomes increasingly interesting
