My career began with teaching all English-related subjects in public and private high schools. This included English, American, and World Literature; grammar; public speaking; journalism; theater; analytical and creative writing. After a successful teaching career, I joined the business world, holding high administrative positions in both the profit and non-profit sectors.

While working full-time, I spent many years tutoring on a volunteer basis for several organizations, including East Harlem Tutorial Services and POSSE. After years in often crowded classrooms, I especially enjoyed the one-on-one relationship as a tutor. I recently gave private assistance to an applicant, successfully assisting her with her application essay for graduate school. I served for many years as an interviewer/evaluator of prospective students to Carnegie Mellon University as a member of their Alumni Admissions Council.

I feel that the wide breadth of my experience, both as a teacher and as a tutor, give me a firm background to continue my tutoring career. My college background (B.A. and M.A. in English) and my professional experience have enhanced my ability to assist students in all English-related subjects.

If you are looking for an experienced, knowledgeable, empathetic person to assist you with your studies, please get in touch with me. I have an open schedule and am looking forward to exploring tutoring opportunities.

Approved Subjects

English

English

I have many years of high school English teaching experience, as well as an M.A. in English from Carnegie Mellon University.
Grammar

Grammar

I taught English grammar (a sadly neglected subject) in all grades, 9 through 12. I believe that a fundamental knowledge of grammar is essential in providing tools for writing and public speaking.
Literature

Literature

Helping students gain an understanding of great literature has always been one of my favorite aspects of teaching/tutoring. Sometimes it takes a little work and patience to cut through what might be elevated language and complicated plot structure so that the student can clearly understand the meaning of the piece.
Proofreading

Proofreading

Proofreading is one of my favorite activities. I not only enjoy finding errors, but I also enjoy explaining why they are errors. Even in my business career, I was often the person chosen to proofread documents, letters, etc.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I taught public speaking on the high school level for many years. I also directed several high school theatrical productions.
SAT Writing

SAT Writing

I have tutored students in SAT prep. My high school teaching experience has been invaluable in assisting students with their writing submissions. I am an excellent editor and have the skills to hone and refine writing samples.
Vocabulary

Vocabulary

Increasing students' vocabulary is key to success is so many areas: public speaking, reading comprehension, writing, etc.
Writing

Writing

I have experience assisting students with their writing skills in both creative and analytical writing. I was the editor of a collection of students' creative writing when I taught at a Pittsburgh high school.
