Born into a family of educators, including elementary school teachers, librarians, and a Deputy Chancellor, teaching is something I was born to do. I am a Vassar College alumni, obtained a Masters of Science in Elementary education, as well as extensive studies in Library Science and School Building Leadership. I have over 15 years experience teaching Upper Elementary Grades 3-5 with a range of roles including a classroom teacher, an Instructional Coach for literacy and mathematics, and a Library Media Specialist. My extensive background in teaching diverse student populations has strengthened my dedication to supporting all learners in the development of essential knowledge, deep understanding and skills. As well as, each students ability to work at high levels of thought on authentic tasks.
Presently, I am working in a high performing District 2 elementary school and working part-time as a tutor on homework support and state test preparation.
As a math instructor I look to establish students mathematical strengths in order to address misconceptions.
In literacy, I focus on student analysis of text and the synthesis of new ideas.
I have created and implemented numerous common core lessons and units of study that address the rigorous demands of the Common Core State Standards. Students that have worked with me have surpassed the performance expectations of their grade level and have exceeded in the growth percentile of their peers in class and on statewide standardized assessments.
I have worked as a permanently certified New York State Common Branch teacher for over 15 years.
I love teaching and working to support student in reaching their maximum potential. I am excited to have the opportunity to work with an array of students to help them to play a more active role in their learning process. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
The Common Core standards are focused on 3 key ideas. The Common Core emphasizes critical thinking, the integration of knowledge across disciplines, and reasoning. Requiring students to analyze, discuss, evaluate, justify and explain their thinking, especially in writing. As an instructional practice a lot of my work with students is based on requiring students to problem solve and explain how their rationale for arriving at a solution or conclusion.
I have taught as a New York State permanently certified Common Branch teacher (K-6) for over 15 years. Working in public schools in both districts 2, 7, and 9, I have experience both inside and outside of the classroom. I have served as an upper grade elementary teacher, library teacher, instructional coach, and data specialist. I also have extensive experience with intervention methods and private tutoring.
Thinking deeply about text is enhanced through the practice of discussion and immediate feedback. Often times students do not receive adequate practice implementing these think aloud skills in class and find great success in private tutoring.
