Composition (Music)

Composition is my major at Juilliard. I have won many of the nation's most prestigious composition competitions, and received numerous commissions and performances from professional ensembles all over the nation. I study with the former composer-in-residence of the New York Philharmonic.

Ear Training

I had all A's throughout my ear training studies at Juilliard, even testing out of the freshmen class due to my exceptional performance in the entrance exam. I have perfect pitch, but have helped many of my private students without perfect pitch to hear intervals, chords, and function without having one. My theory and ear training students have gone onto score exceptionally well in their placement exams in schools all around the country.

Korean

My first language is Korean, and I read, write, and speak at a native level. I taught at my church's Korean School for my extracurricular volunteering experience during high school; I also currently tutor college-level Korean in New York City. Since I can speak both English and Korean at a native level and have lived in Korea throughout my childhood, I will not only be able to effectively teach the Korean language but also explain the culture and subtleties that come with learning about a new country. I am willing to teach beginners, intermediate, and advanced students.

Music Theory

I am a theory teaching fellow at Juilliard at both the undergraduate and graduate level. I teach theory concepts and keyboard harmony to Juilliard students and evaluate their progress and performance. I have tutored many students who have gone onto score exceptionally well in their theory placement exams at many universities and conservatories around the country.

Piano

Korean American composer, pianist, organist and educator Jae was born in Seoul, South Korea. He is based in New York City where he serves on the faculty of The Juilliard School Pre-College. His compositions have been performed and commissioned by numerous ensembles including “The President’s Own” United States Marine Band, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Chamber Singers, and Choir of Christ and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. His many awards include the American Prize in Composition and National Association for Music Education Composition Award as well as a prize and recognition from the ASCAP Morton Gould Awards. Jae has performed at Carnegie Hall (Stern Auditorium) as well as the Fox Theatre in Atlanta and his music has been performed in leading concert venues around the country including The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Jae is currently Music Director and Organist of The Episcopal Church of St. Matthew and St. Timothy in the Upper West Side where he accompanies Anglican services in English and Spanish and conducts its professional choir. He was previously the Organist at the historic Riverdale Presbyterian Church. Graduating with academic honors, Jae received both his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from The Juilliard School where he studied composition with Christopher Rouse. He was a Gluck Community Service Fellow from 2014-2017 and Music Analysis and Theory Teaching Fellow from 2015-2018, working under Eric Ewazen and Wayne Oquin.
