About Luis

Tutoring has become a prominent piece of my life in the past year, and I love every second of it. Throughout high school and into my freshman year of college, I have always helped fellow classmates that ever needed assistance, but it wasn't until the summer before my sophomore year that I began tutoring in a professional setting. I began working with elementary to high school kids over the summer, preparing them for the upcoming year of school in reading, writing, and math. Once my sophomore year officially began, I dedicated my time to tutoring college students in Algebra, Precalculus, and Calculus I, while also volunteering to tutor high school students in various math and sciences in preparation for the New York State Regents Examinations.

Overall I find tutoring to be the most satisfying work I have ever had the pleasure to take part in. It has helped me garner a much deeper understanding in the fields in which I thought I already had a rich background in. I hope to one day become a teacher, and perhaps even a professor, and I feel that in order to do excel in either position, I must be able to expose myself to as many different minds as I can, since each one is completely individual. There is no uniform methodology to teaching; one must be versatile and ready to change up lesson plans on the fly. A quote that I now live by is the following: "If you can't explain it simply, you don't understand it well enough." - Albert Einstein.

I have tutored math at every age, beginning at the elementary school level up to college students. I feel that working with all different types of students has forced me to view each subject in a different light, helping me to view things from new perspectives. Now when learning new subject matter, I think about how I can teach it to someone else, and it has vastly made me a better student, and an even better tutor.

I want to help my students be less afraid of math, and perhaps even find the joy and beauty in it that I do. At the end of the day, I am also a student that understands how it feels to be overwhelmed with work and school, and simply want to help in the best way I can!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
