About Tara

I find nothing more rewarding than helping students to deeply understand how things work and to watch them grow more and more confident in their own abilities. I am a full-time high school physics and engineering teacher, and the classroom setting allows for all kinds of exciting projects, demos, labs, and group work. Conversely, working with students one-on-one gives me the opportunity to tailor my teaching to their individual learning styles.

This is my 17th year as a full-time high school science (physics & engineering) and math teacher. I began tutoring privately while getting my undergraduate degree in engineering (biomedical-electrical) and graduate degree in education. I'd love to help you or your child see the joy of science and math!

I have an engineering background, so I'm well aware of the applications even the most seemingly abstract math topics. Additionally, I have both tutored in math and taught it in high school, so I understand the curriculum and am able to explain it in different ways.

Science and math can be challenging, but that's also why they're so satisfying once you understand them. I'm available for tutoring both online and in person and want to help you or your child get to that level of satisfaction.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I'm a full-time high school science and math teacher and can help you or your child focus on test-taking strategies as well as solidifying understanding of the material itself. The math covered on the test isn't generally as challenging as some of the harder problems taught in school, but being able to work through the questions quickly is key.

ACT Science

I'm a full-time high school science and math teacher and can help you or your child focus on test-taking strategies as well as solidifying understanding of the material itself. The science covered on the test relies less on memorization of terms and more on being able to think logically about the material presented in the questions themselves, so the key is to focus on habits of mind and speed when working through problems.

Algebra 1

I am a full-time high school physics and engineering teacher, and have both taught and tutored in high school math and chemistry as well. I have years of experience to draw on and can both break down concepts to their fundamentals and also demonstrate applications in order to make abstract concepts more relevant and concrete.

Algebra 2

As a full-time high school physics and engineering teacher who has also taught high school math, I not only have experience teaching the material but can also make it relevant to students through real-world applications.

Calculus

Calculus was invented specifically as a way of solving physics problems, and as a physics teacher with an engineering background, I can not only help students understand the concepts but also make them relevant and tangible through real-world applications.

Chemistry

I am a full-time high school physics and engineering teacher, and have both taught and tutored in high school math and chemistry as well. I have years of experience to draw on and can both break down concepts to their fundamentals and also demonstrate applications in order to make abstract concepts more relevant and concrete. With my background in biomedical-electrical engineering, I have many real-world situations to draw on for chemical applications.

Geometry

I am a full-time high school physics and engineering teacher, and have both taught and tutored in high school math and chemistry as well. One of the tricks with geometry is being able to visual the shapes and the relationships that result; I can help students work on their spatial reasoning, which makes everything that follows much easier to comprehend.

Physical Science

I am a full-time high school physics and engineering teacher, and have both taught and tutored in high school math and chemistry as well. Physical science is often tricky for students because it can seem like a lot of disparate concepts that need to be memorized; by focusing on the underlying ideas that recur throughout, I can help students understand the material more completely.

Physics

I have been a full-time physics and engineering teacher for the past 17 years, teaching physics at a variety of levels from conceptual to honors/AP. My goal is always to help students truly understand the material and not just to get through the problems.

Precalculus

I am a full-time high school physics and engineering teacher, and have both taught and tutored in high school math and chemistry as well. I have years of experience to draw on and can both break down concepts to their fundamentals and also demonstrate applications in order to make abstract concepts more relevant and concrete.

Trigonometry

I am a full-time high school physics and engineering teacher, and have both taught and tutored in high school math and chemistry as well. Trigonometry can often seem like a list of abstract and incomprehensible equations to be memorized; in reality, it's based on some key spatial relations and proportions, and by focusing on those, I can help students understand the formulas that come from them.
