Hello everyone!
My name is Marissa and I graduated with honors from Columbia University with my Masters in Early Childhood General and Special Education and from Clark University with my Masters in International Education. I have been an educator for the past decade, both domestically and abroad, specializing in ELA, ESL, and foundational math skills. I earned a Fulbright Scholarship to teach in Thailand and in South Africa, focusing on cultivating English reading and writing skills. I am also certified in TESOL. I am currently a lead teacher in the city!

My love for teaching began from a young age. As a little girl, I use to give lessons to my stuffed animals and baby brother, writing on a whiteboard in my squiggly cursive. When I started high school, I became a homework helper for the community elementary school and knew that I wanted to become a teacher then. I started tutoring a few students from the elementary school who were referred to me by teachers who had noticed a difference in their learners' reading abilities.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been an early childhood and elementary school educator for the past five years, both in general and special education classrooms. I taught domestically in New York City public schools, in a self-contained special education school, and a private lab school at Teachers College where I not only was able to work with young learners but teach graduate students in the early childhood education program. Abroad, I worked at Manenburg Primary School as a K-3rd core curriculum teacher and was able to develop a bi-literacy program for struggling readers. I specialize in Realistic Mathematics Education as well as the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project curriculum.

Yoga

Yoga

I have been a student of meditative yoga and mindfulness for over a decade before spending the past six years as an educator. I have worked as an instructor to provide coping and healing techniques to women who have experienced domestic and sexual violence and youths in juvenile detention facilities domestically and abroad. Currently, I have combined my meditation and mindfulness experience and restorative justice to teach others about the punitive systems that perpetuate inequities in our society.
