Instruction is too often force-fed to students without any decisions being made by those who are being taught; I believe in fostering an academic environment based on student interests and autonomy, where students and the instructor work together as an equal team with both sides speaking their mind and sharing a laugh.
I graduated from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia in 2014 with a BA in English literature. During these undergraduate years, I honed my skills in analyzing literature, proofreading, writing clear, organized essays and applying class readings to my own life. My abilities in these areas, essential for any English course, greatly helped my instruction of ninth-grade students in the Atlanta branch of Breakthrough Collaborative, a summer school program for low-income students. I have no doubt that my skills will continue to help any of my future students succeed in their academic coursework.
With this foundation in English, I am now earning my Master's degree in secondary English education from the prestigious Teachers College, Columbia University, an education program nationally ranked in the top five. My graduate coursework has consisted of a variety of classes specifically focused on practical teaching, particularly in writing, reading and curriculum development. During the Fall 2014 semester, I was a full-time student-teacher of English at New York's renowned Stuyvesant High School. I was also a daily writing tutor at Stuyvesant for any student that needed help in their English courses. In Fall 2015, I will be a student-teacher of English at the equally prestigious Bronx High School of Science.
In addition to these teaching experiences, I am also a co-developer and co-facillitator of a New York City workshop (Empowered Families Empowering Student Writers) focused on strengthening parent-teacher relationships and helping parents become more supportive of their child's writing
