About Daniel

I specialize in English, Writing and History (American, European, and World History), and enjoy working with students on day to day assignments as well as larger research papers and test preparation. I have over eight years of experience working with grade school, high school, and college age students. I am very skilled at engaging each student based on his or her unique way of understanding the subject at hand. I like to help students discover ways to activate their creativity and put an individual stamp on their assignments, so that they can be interested and enthusiastic about managing what can sometimes be a daunting workload!

I have also done extensive SAT and ACT tutoring. I like to help students understand the specific types of questions these tests pose, and work with them to develop appropriate strategies so that they can do their absolute best. I enjoy helping them go through their mistakes so that they can better understand how to approach a similar question on future exams and complete their work with confidence and in the time allotted.

Finally, I have worked with students to develop and manage college application strategies and application essays. I enjoy helping students discover which institutions may best fit their future career and life goals, since there are so many options and the choices can seem overwhelming! Students I have managed the college application process for have gone on to Yale University, Columbia University, and Stanford University.

Originally from Dallas, TX, I have a degree in Art History from Columbia University. I am also an accomplished playwright and my works include "The Picture of Dorian Gray" (adapted from the Oscar Wilde novel), "The Genius!" (about the life of painter Salvador Dali), "Gloria" (an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald), and "The Boy With Seven Hearts," a multimedia theater project about the poet Federico Garcia Lorca that is currently being workshopped. My plays have been produced at Theatre Row, Playwrights Horizons, the Atlantic, The Looking Glass, The Cherry Lane, and more.

I have played the piano since age four and still give concerts regularly. Based on my experience working in the theater and music worlds, I enjoy helping students explore extracurricular activities in the arts, whether it be a potential career interest or an excellent way to round out a solid college application.

As you can probably tell, I have a wide variety of interests and passions in my own life and like to encourage students not only to excel in their schoolwork but also to develop a well-rounded personality and set of life pursuits.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Patient, reliable and fun

My 9th grade daughter has enjoyed working with Daniel very much. She says he makes otherwise "boring" homework something she can relate to and even fun. That says a lot!
