SUNY Potsdam (Master's)
I am an inquisitive student of the seemingly disparate disciplines of mathematics and music. I am currently a Pure Mathematics PhD student at the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan. I also have my BM from the Crane Institute for Music Business in Music Business with a specialization in double bass and my MA in Pure Mathematics from SUNY Potsdam.
I most enjoy the process of developing a student's understanding from the foundations. All too often, teachers of math are not familiar with the foundations of what they teach and cannot discuss the motivation behind the definitions and facts that students are required to learn and understand. This is unfortunate. I have an exceptional understanding of how and why math concepts "work" and am excited to share this with students.
For my graduate study, I specialized in algebraic geometry. I have taken Calculus I, II, III, Linear Algebra I, II, Set Theory and Logic, Theory of Sets (graduate), Modern Algebra I, II, Abstract Algebra I, II (graduate), Advanced Calculus I, II, Real Analysis I, II (graduate), Complex Analysis I (graduate), and have tutored Probability and Statistics. I have also taken a sequence of business courses for my Music Business degree, including Micro/Macroeconomics, Accounting, Marketing, and Management. I can tutor/teach any form of math you need me to tutor/teach, basically!
I am a young, patient and passionate tutor with an interdisciplinary background. My musical and business backgrounds allow me to speak articulately and passionately about math with students who may not find math so fascinating or understandable. I have myriad examples of real-world applications in mind when I discuss math with students, especially since I have been involved in research projects regarding the application of math to quantum computing and am an amateur app developer - fascinating stuff! James is a wonderful tutor. I am enrolled in an online calculus class and James has been very helpful. We meet every week for hours and he goes over all the material, explaining each concept and breaking it down into simpler terms. He's always accommodating with meetings and makes himself available for as long as you need. Since its an online class, James is not only just my tutor but also like a professor teaching me each lesson. He's very intelligent and also patient when I do not understand a rule or concept. I am very glad I found James and I plan on meeting with many more times for tutoring sessions. I recommend him for anyone taking a difficult math class. He's the best!
Thank you, Elizabeth!
James tutored me in College Algebra, answered my questions, and helped me get past some points I was stuck on. I feel so much more comfortable heading into my final exam.
James is an amazing tutor! He was very patient and always had different way explaining the same problem. Sometimes I was getting frustrated with myself and he always reassured me that it's okay. I had a test on the day he tutored me and it's because of him I was able to get through the test confidently. Thank you James for all of your help. It's great to find a supportive tutor!!
As I asked a dozen questions for every step, James displayed no signs of impatience. He knew every topic like the back of his hand. In addition, he gave me an encouraging background story of how he became good at math. If anyone considers using James, two thumbs up if you've just read this.
James was amazing! Will def recommend and go back! We went through many elements of excel including some complex solutions and formulas. I feel much more comfortable in my use of excel across the board.

James is an excellent math tutor. He knows the material and can convey it well. Our son and James are getting along well and they have made tremendous progress towards our son placing out of Advanced Geometry this fall. Thanks a bunch for your terrific help, James.
Thank you very much!
He was amazing. My son really thought he was great. He has always struggled with math in school. Now he feels he can do it.
Thank you so much!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have tutored several students for the math portions of the ACT and SAT, and have a strong understanding of the fundamentals that these exams test. I work with each student to master these foundational concepts so that he or she can apply them to any problem encountered on the exam.
My passion for mathematics motivates students! A recent graduate of the renowned BA/MA Mathematics program at SUNY Potsdam has instilled in me a great love for mathematics, and I have no difficulty motivating students to feel the same. I have extensive tutoring experience for someone as young and lively as myself, and have tutored in one-on-one settings privately and in academia for four years.
I also received my BM in Music Business from The Crane School of Music, where I studied the upright bass. My musical background and experience with a discipline so different from very technical mathematics allows me to humanize math for students. I also have research experience that exemplifies what it is that you can do with a mathematics education. I find that students want to know why they should study math, and I can provide many examples from my own personal experiences. (including quantum computing!)
I have a MA in Mathematics and specialized in Algebraic Geometry, which is centered around Algebra. I have extensive experience tutoring students as a result of my graduate assistantship, where I was responsible for tutoring students in Calculus 1, 2, and 3, PreCalculus, Probability and Statistics, and Set Theory and Logic.
I graduated with a degree in music business from the Crane Institute for Music Business and Entrepreneurship and have won several awards in academic Entrepreneurial Competitions including the Undergraduate Excellence Award at the New York State Business Plan Competition hosted at SUNY Polytechnic Institute for an app development idea that I am currently developing.
As a graduate assistant during the completion of my MA in Mathematics, I was responsible for tutoring students in Calculus I, II, and III. I have been tutoring Calculus at the college level for over three years in various settings, including group, one-on-one, and lab tutoring.

I am proficient in graph theory and have experience with algebraic graph theory as a result of an undergraduate research project, where the adjacency and Laplacian matrices were studied extensively. I am comfortable with Boolean algebra and combinatorial logic. I understand the principle of mathematical induction and how to apply it to develop combinatorial arguments, particularly to determine the closed form expressions.
I have taken a complete aural skills sequence at the Crane School of Music. This sequence includes sight singing, interval training, chord recognition, rhythmic, harmonic, and melodic dictation. I performed exceptionally.
I am a PhD student in mathematics, so I have grappled with all of the topics that will be introduced in such a course. I understand fully the notions of proof by induction, set theory and logic, graph theory, and basic number theory and have had several years experience tutoring students in these areas as a tutor working for the college. I have also conducted research in graph theory and combinatorial methods for analyzing quantum networks utilizing the adjacency and Laplacian matrices.
I graduated with a BM from The Crane School of Music with a concentration in double bass. I play the double bass, electric bass, guitar, and sing professionally in such ensemble settings as chamber orchestras, jazz ensembles, and jazz combos. I have an extensive knowledge of music theory and composition technique due to my classical training.
My graduate study focused on Algebraic Geometry, the application of algebraic methods to geometric problems, so I am extremely well-versed in geometry. In fact, geometry is one of my favorite subjects in mathematics. I have tutored several students for the Geometry Regents exam and have tremendous experience doing so.
Linear Algebra is an integral portion of Algebra as a whole and I am a PhD student in mathematics. I am familiar with the Rank-Nullity Theorem and understand how to apply it to make conclusions about the dimension of a space. I fully understand the notions of eigenvectors and eigenvalues and how they pertain to linear transformations. Furthermore, I have experience working with matrix theory to describe networks in quantum information theory due to a research project I was involved in.
I am a PhD student in mathematics and logic is an integral topic within mathematics. I have tutored students in set theory and logic, finite math, and discrete math for several years. I understand various proof techniques, including proof by induction, proof by contraposition, proof by contradiction, etc. and in fact employ these techniques each and every day in my own coursework.
I have used Microsoft Excel for various business scenarios and have demonstrated its functionality to colleagues of mine in a variety of settings, including business, physics, engineering, statistics, and mathematics.
I have prepared several business presentations with PowerPoint and have given talks using the software. I currently teach at SUNY Farmingdale and incorporate PowerPoint into my lessons.
I have graduated from The Crane School of Music which requires its students to take a sequence of three music history courses which cover the music of the Renaissance to today.
I am a recent graduate of The Crane School of Music, where I studied Music Business and concentrated on Double Bass. Thus, I have taken a sequence of four courses in each of Aural Skills/Sight Singing and Music Theory. I have a substantial composition portfolio and I received a perfect score on both the Aural, Theoretical, and Sight Singing portions of the Advanced Placement exams.
The focus of my MA in Mathematics is in Algebraic Geometry, which encompasses quite a bit of Algebra. I have a vast amount of experience and have tutored several students in Algebra I, II, and Prealgebra.
