About Lauren

Hello, parents and students! Nice to meet you. I'm Lauren, and you can think of me more as a private teacher / personal test trainer than as a tutor.

* Am I The Right Tutor For You? *

There are many great tutors and classes out there, who are a good fit for the average student – but these options are not right for everyone. Many parents come to me after trying out other tutors and not seeing the results they were hoping for. I am the tutor for you if:

1) You are looking to make a huge jump – for example, from a 450 to 710 on the GMAT, or a 21 to 32 on the ACT (results my students achieved this year).
2) You are a high-achieving student aiming for the Ivy League and looking to go from the 90th percentile to 99th percentile (results four of my students achieved this year).
3) You are pressed for time, and looking to optimize every spare minute you have, while balancing a full course-load and extracurriculars, or holding a full-time job. (I work with many top student athletes and successful professionals preparing for the GMAT, GRE, and LSAT.)

* Why I Teach *

Tutoring is not just a job to me – it is my passion. I chose this industry because I absolutely love working 1-on-1 with students. I connect and relate with each of my students, instill confidence in them, and teach them the skills to succeed. I am often the first person my students text or Facetime when they receive their scores and admissions letters, and there's nothing I look forward to more than 4 AM texts with ACT scores attached!

I also know that conquering the psychological barriers standardized tests impose is often equivalent to, if not harder than, mastering the subject matter. Like many of my students, I was a very anxious test-taker, and helping my students work through these anxieties is very important to me. I work with them to ease their fears about the testing experience and allow them to show their true potential when taking the actual exam.

* All-Inclusive Rate *

I only bill for time spent in sessions or editing essays. I do not bill for the many hours I spend outside of session, offering text support, creating lesson plans, and providing updates to parents. When I work with students, I create individualized curricula, track their progress and strengths/weaknesses, suggest the best materials, create study schedules and timetables for testing and retesting, work on pacing and test strategy, and so much more. I optimize time spent both in and out of sessions, so that my students see the best results in the shortest amount of time – and so that each session provides the most value. I commit to tutoring full-time, only work with a select number of students at once, and am available round the clock to provide the best support out there for my students.

* About Me: *

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Brown in 2011, and in the top 10% of my class from a top private school in Northern NJ, where I took a combined AP / IB curriculum. I have been a professional academic and test prep tutor for the past decade, both privately and through a top test prep company, and I have worked with over 150 students. My specialties include GMAT, LSAT, GRE, ACT and SAT prep; math and English classes; undergraduate and graduate admissions consulting and application essay assistance.

When I'm not tutoring or preparing lessons, I spend my time training for the New York Marathon, writing, and trying out new recipes.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Business

I have tutored and mentored many students in business. I started my first company, SmartSitting, as a sophomore at Brown. SmartSitting is now one of the top childcare agencies in NYC. I started my second company, Dating Ring, in 2013. Dating Ring was accepted into the prestigious accelerator, Y Combinator, and has been featured in many media outlets including the NYTimes, the Wall Street Journal, Time, Fox News, and Nightline. The company will be the focus of season 2 of the top podcast, StartUp, produced by This American Life's Alex Blumberg.

College Counseling

I have worked with many students on their college app essays, as well as going through the Fiske guide and choosing different colleges to apply to. One of my students even had his essay chosen as the first place winner in a scholarship competition. Many of my students have been accepted into Ivy League schools. My mother is an experienced college consultant and I have also worked with her with many students.

GMAT

You are probably working full-time and don't have time to waste when it comes to GMAT prep. I will help you to achieve the best possible results in the shortest amount of time. I have ten years of experience helping students prepare for standardized tests, and the GMAT is my favorite test to teach. Last year, I helped students see major score improvements, including from a 450 to a 710 (in one month!), a 530 to a 680, and a 500 to 610. I also assist many of my students with the B school admissions process.

GRE

I have been a standardized test prep tutor for the past 10 years. I utilize my experience with all major tests to prepare the best material for the GRE. I have helped many students achieve their desired scores and get into their dream schools.

ISEE

I have been a standardized test prep tutor for the past 10 years. I utilize my experience with all major tests to prepare the best material for the ISEE. I have helped many students achieve their desired scores and get into the best private schools.

LSAT

You are probably working full-time and don't have time to waste when it comes to LSAT prep. I will help you to achieve the best possible results in the shortest amount of time. I have ten years of experience helping students prepare for standardized tests, and love teaching the LSAT. I have specialized methods for teaching the logic games, critical reasoning, and reading comprehension sections. Last year, I helped students see major score improvements, including from a 136 to a 155 and a 142 to a 156. I also assist many of my students with the law school admissions process.

PSAT

I have been teaching the SAT for the past ten years, and went through extensive training before I began teaching the new SAT. While many tutors just work through problems and answer questions, I am more of a private teacher / personal test trainer. I assess the bigger picture, and plan each session strategically. Many parents come to me after trying out other classes or tutors and not seeing good results. I optimize time spent both in and out of sessions, so that my students see the best results in the shortest amount of time.

Study Skills

I've helped dozens of students with study skills - from creating weekly routines, to color-coded flashcards, to setting reasonable goals. So often, students lack the confidence they need to succeed. I build strong relationships with students, and am able to relate to them as a peer, and encourage them to get the work done (even if they feel they'll never need to know the material as adults).

I am so grateful to have found Lauren. She is an incredible tutor. She is organized, smart, encouraging and beyond helpful. I am a 26-year-old applying to college for the first time. Lauren has helped me prepare for the reading/writing portion of the SAT’s but also with my entire application. I was very intimated with the application process until I met Lauren.
