About Rene

I am a certified New York State public school teacher specializing in the area of Technology and its applications for career development. For the last 14 years I have instructed many students of diverse cultures and backgrounds, including non-English speakers, to not only learn how to use the computer, but how to effectively apply it to enhance their math and reading skills. Through my pedagogy, we learn how to incorporate hardware and software applications while infusing current technologies such as the Cloud and Office applications in both Mac and PC platforms.

I've taught as young as first graders, up to adults, both in public schools and privately. Although I'm a PC person, I regularly use iMac, and iPads to instruct and tutor. Moreover, I've served both as a consultant and technician for school-wide and home network implementation.

In the area of math, although there's a shift to more literacy and reading comprehension, many children and adults find current math questions confusing and/or frustrating. Using traditional methods and strategies, I've been able to guide both students and their families to deconstruct many of the multi-layered questions found now in workbooks and in school activities. Additionally, I can recommend websites and online tools (some available free or at low-cost) that can further assist the student.

Not all of us are tech savvy, but we do need someone to guide us with the fundamentals. During a tutoring lesson, you'll receive a caring approach in which you will be guided step-by-step to achieve your goals.

Those seeking Chess instruction, I am a member of the United States Chess Federation, and currently tutor students who have minimal or no experience.

Additionally, for those interested, I am a fluent Spanish speaker. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.

I look forward working with you to achieve your goals, both personally and professionally.

Sincerely,
Rene M.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chess

I've been an avid chess player since childhood and recently became a chess instructor for two middle schools where in one instance my students took first place in overall wins in the 2013-2014 school year. I regularly play on a leading chess website where my rating ranks between 1500-1600 (Blitz - 3 to 5 minute games).

I have designed a unit of lesson plans where I introduce chess pieces, strategies, videos, and chess notation to all my students and have led after-school programs for middle and high school students.

My approach is caring, and understanding, but I will ask engaging questions to develop strategies and critical thinking skills that serve well beyond the chess board. This method is designed after 15+ years of teaching experience and therefore have witnessed what works and what doesn't as instruction - regardless of the subject.

Desktop Publishing

I have more than 10 years of desktop publishing experience designing yearbooks and documents (brochures, banners, and web articles) for private and educational institutions. Software includes, but is not limited to, QuarkExpress, MS Word, MS Publisher, and Photoshop.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified New York State educator in the area of Childhood Education in grades 1-6 for over 15 years. Within my technology curriculum, I infuse content which covers writing, spelling, and grammar content. During the last several years, there has been an increased need of Language Arts for native speakers as well as foreign born requiring I cover basic writing and reading skills (punctuation, capitalization, phonics, etc) as well as coordinating with Special Education teachers to reach students of diverse needs and backgrounds.

With this experience, I believe I am able to assist children of elementary level, as well young teenagers in reading and writing comprehension.

Elementary Math

I am certified NYC Department of Education Technology Instructor specializing in the area of technology. However, as an instructor I incorporate many of the elementary mathematical principles found in today's Common Core curriculum.

General Computer

I have a BA in Graphic Design and Master's in Education Technology. I have expertise in MS Office, Google Apps and Photoshop. I'm a certified New York State Public School educator for over 14 years in the area of technology. JavaScript

As a webmaster, I've written Javascript coding for both coursework and employment. I've served as a webmaster for multiple organizations where in-depth knowledge of HTML and Javascript is required. Although online services such as Weebly and Wordpress do not necessitate advance programming, I've been able to modify web templates to serve customization for clients and students.

Macintosh

My educational coursework allows me to work on both PC and Mac platforms. As an undergraduate, I earned my BA in Graphic Design solely working on Macs, and as a technology educator, I've work on both operating systems for almost 15 years. Working in the public school system exposes me to both PC and Macs on a weekly basis for both troubleshooting and task applications.

Beyond serving as an instructor, I am able to manage a school's hardware and software infrastructure (updating software, troubleshooting network connectivity, and manage a computer lab on a Windows platform.) Furthermore, I assist in home setup of wireless devices for both PC and Macs.

Just Want I Needed!

In preparation for a course I'll be teaching this summer, I hired Rene to help me understand how Google Classroom works. He thoroughly - and patiently - explained the various aspects of the site & app, encouraging and guiding me to try out the various features for myself. He also really listened to my questions about the possible limits of the program and helped me see how I could use it in ways t
