Bio

As a Chess coach, I am a member of the United States Chess Federation, and currently, tutor children and adults who have minimal or no experience. In 2013 my middle school chess team finished 1st place overall in the Non-Rated division (a group mostly encompassed by children with little or no experience). Additionally, I personally compete in tournaments: recently winning 4 of 5 games in the 16TH ANNUAL MANHATTAN OPEN 2017 (NY), allowing me to finish with a 1597 rating.

As a classroom teacher, I am able to determine your strength and weakness in order to guide you in the right direction.
I am a certified New York State public-school teacher specializing in the area of Technology and its applications for career development. For the last 20 years, I have instructed many students of diverse cultures and backgrounds, including non-English speakers, to not only learn how to use the computer, but how to effectively apply it to enhance their math and reading skills. Through my pedagogy, we learn how to incorporate hardware and software applications while infusing current technologies such as the Cloud and Office applications on both Mac and PC platforms.
Not all of us are tech-savvy, but we do need someone to guide us with the fundamentals. During a tutoring lesson, you'll receive a caring approach in which you will be guided step-by-step to achieve your goals.
Lastly, for those interested, I am a fluent Spanish speaker. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
I look forward to working with you to achieve your goals, both personally and professionally.
Sincerely,
Rene M.

Chess

I've been an avid chess player since childhood and recently became a chess instructor for two middle schools wherein one instance my students took first place in overall wins in the 2013-2014 school year. I regularly play on a leading chess website where my rating ranks between 1500-1600 (Blitz - 3 to 5-minute games). I competed in the 17TH ANNUAL MANHATTAN OPEN on August 2018 (NY) and finished 2nd overall with 4 wins and a tie out of five grueling games to conclude with 1674 USCF Rating. I've designed lessons where I introduce chess pieces, strategies, and chess notation for all my students. These strategies have been successful in private, and after-school programs. My approach is caring, and understanding, but I will ask engaging questions in order to develop critical thinking skills that serve everyone well beyond the chess board. This methodology is based on 17+ years of classroom experience.

A Tutor who Customizes his Lessons to Meet the Student Where they Are Starting

I like that Rene breaks everything down step by step, to ensure that I understand each concept. He also customizes the lessons to flow with my pace. He also has a great sense of humor and keeps the lessons engaging and fun.

Had my first lesson with Rene this evening and couldn’t be happier. He immediately pointed out some simple things I can do(but never considered!) to improve my game. Can’t wait for next week. Highly recommend.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Rene is an excellent instructor for the novice chess player that is looking to put order and rationale in their game. He helped me identify areas to focus on and overcome my own hesitation in other areas.

Knowledgeable and efficient

Rene is a great! It’s hard to find someone who not only is great at something but can teach it great as well! Rene showed me tools and techniques that helped improves my game as an amateur chess player, on top of that we had great conversation while playing. Great down to earth teacher!
