I am a patient and knowledgeable teacher, tutor and writer with experience working with students of all levels of aptitude and academic interest. I'm born and raised in New York City, a product of the public schools system. I've worked for many years in both public and charter schools, teaching a diverse group of young learners. I've worked with high achieving students at one of NYC's top Gifted and Talented Programs. I've worked with the diverse population of Jackson Heights, struggling, remedial readers from upper grades, and even recent immigrants from Mainland China, finding academic success with all of these demographics. I also bring to the table an extensive history of working in the arts in NYC, writing for theater, film and television.

I have my certification in 7-12 English Language Arts from City College, a Masters in writing from Columbia University, and a long history of working in the arts and writing in New York City.

If you choose me to work with your child, I guarantee that his or skills in reading, writing, or critical thinking will improve. Your child will develop a greater facility with writing, a love of reading for pleasure as well as for information, and improved problem-solving skills. We will work on a variety of tasks and activities, all aligned with the Common Core, to improve and refine a multitude of skills and abilities. Together we will work on reading comprehensions, writing exercises (creative, informational, and persuasive) and grammar practice. We will read poetry, non-fiction, short fiction, and drama, and learn new and interesting things from all of them. I look forward to working with you.

Public Speaking

My training in ELA and Theater makes me more than qualified to tutor students in the art of public speaking. One of the foundations of English Language Arts is speaking, and I've taken classes, in how to make yourself understood clearly, coherently, and easily. I've taught many students diction, voice, and how to communicate ideas with clarity and ease. My theater training also applies to this skill set. I've taken multiple voice and diction classes, and have learned and taught how to use the body and voice as instruments. I have taught these skills to students of all ages.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have my ELA certification from City College of New York, having been taken multiple courses in early childhood, and primary education. I taught 5th & 6th grade English for two years, before going to middle and high schools. I also have extensive one-on-one tutoring experience with young learners, having worked with 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th graders to help them with elementary level English, math, social studies, and study skills. I am also extremely knowledgable about children's literature (my mother was a school librarian). I have also helped to compose and design curriculum for elementary level charter schools, focusing on subjects like ELA, elementary science, math and social studies, religious studies (this was for a local synagogue) and English for non-native speakers. (The ELL curriculum was for a City of New York initiative for children from immigrant families.) I believe that all of these experiences show that I am qualified to tutor in elementary subjects.

I have extensive experience helping students of all ages and abilities improve their reading comprehension skills. I've taught in the NYC public school system, and have over 5 years of direct tutoring experience. I've worked with young children and adults, advanced and remedial readers, and even students who are learning English as a new language. I've studied reading strategies at City College, and at multiple professional development opportunities through the City of New York. I've taken professional development courses from Generation Ready, Kagan, The Cullman Center, The National Council for the Social Studies, NYPL, the Department of Education and the United Teachers Foundation. I've observed master teachers at practice, and in turn, modeled proper reading for others. Additionally, I have a great appreciation and knowledge of children's, young adult, and teen literature, and even comic books and graphic novels. I have a wealth of experience and strategies to draw upon when I help my clients improve reading comprehension, and build deeper understanding.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I believe that my personal credentials show that I am skilled in study skills. I am a certified 7-12 ELA Teacher, having worked in public, charter, and private schools here in NYC. I have my undergraduate degree from Cornell University, a Masters in Writing from Columbia, and my certification from City College. Additionally, I'm also a published author who works in multiple theaters here in NYC. As a teacher, and as a student myself, I understand and can teach the necessities of prioritizing tasks, setting goals, and the importance of keeping an organized and clean work space. I can help your child organize their assignments by difficulty, work level, and interest, so that boredom is never an obstacle that has to be overcome. I stress taking regular breaks, and incorporating physical activity in the work day (this is especially important for younger children). The key thing about study skills is that not every tactic works for every student. Some students thrive in quiet environments - others need a white noise of music to tune out in order to concentrate. This is the most important thing to take into account when helping a learner with his or her study skills - you have to find out what works for *that* student, and not what works for yourself.

Intelligent and professional

Mike has been helping me write case studies for my professional portfolio. During our lessons, he has given me strategic guidance on how to structure my ideas and helped me to choose the right words for formulating clear, concise sentences. All of these insights helped me strike a balance between my professional and personal writing. With Mike’s exceptional talent as a writer and teacher, combined with his broad knowledge of many subjects, I have been making consistent improvements in my writing. I look forward to continue working with Mike.

Excellent Homeschool Tutor

Michael has been tutoring my son who is homeschooled for the last 5 months 2-3 sessions per week. He is a very patient, knowledgeable and dynamic teacher who has sparked my teenagers interest in English again. Michael has put together all of the content for his sessions, providing him with interesting literature to read, in particular wonderful short stories. He challenges him to read texts closely and think deeply about their content. Michael has also taught my son grammar, which I found he had not adequately learned while at school. One highlight was my son having the opportunity to attend and review an off-Broadway play and actually have his review published on a blog!

Parent

Michael is an amazing tutor. He has the best energy and relates perfectly to young students. He makes the topics relevant and really wants them to succeed. He is willing to speak to teachers too so that the student is doing exactly what is required of them. He is smart, talented and someone you would trust with your children.

Perceptive and efficient

Got right down to business to assess where student is at through natural conversation. Read together, exposing new vocabulary and the richness of the text. Great affect; made for an engaging and fun experience
