About Donna

I received both my BA and Master's degrees in French Language and Literature from New York University and the University of Paris. I have experience teaching French classes from kindergarten through high school levels and have tutored children and adults in French and English as a Second Language. I have also worked as an interpreter and translator for many years, and was the producer and host of a daily bilingual radio program. I speak several other languages as well, and find that each one opens new doors to greater understanding of other cultures and customs. Teaching language arts is a joy for me, and I love sharing the excitement of a new language with others.

I understand the challenge, both emotional and intellectual, of learning a new language, so my goal is to make the lessons a fun experience. I teach in the target language for the most part, because the first step in learning a foreign language is to hear it, even without understanding it. I am an experienced stage actor and I find those skills very helpful in getting the message across to my students. I use storytelling, photos, picture books and games as tools to create an interactive and non-threatening environment. Language learning is fun and exciting. It takes time, of course, to become fluent in a second language, but with steady and consistent work, anyone can do it. My goal is to make the journey a pleasant and rewarding one. My fees are reasonable and I'm available by phone or email at any time to answer questions or help with homework.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I am very well versed in English grammar and syntax, I write well, and I enjoy explaining how the language works. I'm particularly good at helping non-native speakers to improve their accents and sentence structure. I believe language learning should be fun and exciting, and I like to engage in interesting conversation in order to identify and correct the student's weaknesses. I have a Master's degree from NYU and have worked with students at all levels of English proficiency.

French

I hold a BA and MA in French Language & Literature from NYU and University of Paris. I worked at United Nations Radio for several years, became a French/English translator and interpreter, and have taught French in classrooms and privately to adults and to children from pre-K through high school. Learning a new language is challenging and exciting, and I do my best to make it fun. I love helping others to develop their ability first to understand and then to speak French through conversation supported by grammatical explanation.

Grammar

Grammar has always been my strong suit, and I love explaining the mechanics of language to others. I have had very rigorous training in grammar and enjoy sharing this knowledge with my students. I believe that once a student learns the basic rules of English grammar, the pieces fall into place in a way that makes writing and speaking correctly second nature.

Writing

I have extensive experience in writing and editing term papers, publicity materials, business documents and correspondence. I am the regular editor of papers for several students at Princeton and Columbia Universities, and have excellent references.
I hold a Master's degree from New York University, and have many years experience as a writer.
I love writing and editing, and enjoy explaining the intricacies of the English language, particularly to non-native speakers.
